I would love to try a valve integrated but it would need to have at least 6 line-level inputs phono would be ideal too but would also consider an outboard phono stage, pre-outputs for connecting addional power amp (s) or subwoofer in stereo mode. I would need this in a very economical package to replace a Musical Fidelity X-A2 integrated, which offers all of the above as well as a very good level of performance for the sale price I paid for it ;) Suggestions anyone?
If you don't mind buying used vintage amps, how about a Croft Micro pre amp and a vintage valve amp? The Croft Micro has a lovely MM phono stage, but the case looks shite, it sounds superb. You can find one between £80 to £100. A nice vintage Leak Stereo 20 EL84 push pull amp is sweet and the 10W output will be sufficient for normal listening level for your speakers. If you look hard enough, you can find a Stereo 20 for £250 to 300. The total will be about £400, a bit over your budget. You can reduce the cost of the power amp by getting a Rogers Cadet power amp for about £100 to £150, the ECL82 (or ECL86?) valves are just as sweet. Just make sure you change all the old leaky capacitors and out of tolerance resistors, then you will have these vintage amps for another 20 years! Regards Hon
