Has anyone listened to the trichord diablo or the manley steelhead? I am particularly interested in comparisons with the groove or the whest. Does anyone know if the TD is an opamp based or a discrete design?

have a word with WM. He has heard the diablo, steelhead and I think he has heard the groove. Not sure if he has heard the whest.

I think he actually helped trichord with the power supply on the diablo, but that may not be accurate.

I havent had sufficient time with any of them at home to give you any accurate information.

If you're wanting to play with top phono stages, I'd go to emporium too. Nick has the Lector and Shindo Labs gear in. Very tasty.

cheers

Thanks - I have spoken to Tony 6 months ago but am none the wiser for doing so. I am still waiting for the promised demo of his psu. :( See above - he still hasnt told me what I want to know.

I know nick at the emporium. I rate him as one of the 2 or 3 best dealers in the country. He demmed a Simon yorke s7 for me. I am not too keen on valve amps I am afraid - though nick demmed me his modded WAD power amp and that was probably the best valve amp I have heard.

sor - whats that? Now tony that isnt nice... you did promise me. Why else get me to send you my room plan? Perhaps you can write something a bit more detailed about these phono stages?

So - back on topic - anyone heard the diablo or have any other recommendations for me?

I have the Lehmann Black Cube SE and I am very satisfied with it! Cannot understand why people would call it unmusical or whatever... It bettered a Linn Linto.

nick, you really should try to demmo the likes of the steelhead and the shindo labs.

I know you know that you can't dismiss a whole topology based on a 400 quid kit amp with a few trick parts :)

Haha I certainly intend to try the steelhead - does the shindo have tight frequency extremes? I want it all basically.

No, I have heard other valve amps. For all that nicks design might have been based on a WAD kit it still sounded very good - I am sure no tricks are involved. I thought Nicks own speakers were pretty good too. He also swapped cartridegs at whim during the dem which I thought was very committed. I felt bad about buying the brinkmann in the end.

I heard the Lector and Shindo Labs at a show. I thought they sounded great, but its only a show and not a viable demo when compared to trying the kit at home.

Nick reckons the Lector is fantastic and the shindo labs even better, and I've learned to value his reccomendations.

Cheers
Chris

Nicks recommendations are good - though his tastes are different to mine.

What do you think of the idea of step up transformers and then something like a borbely super buffer?

Thanks - what else have you compared it with?
Well, my former phono stage, a Joenit Phonoamp 1 (not very known), a Linn Linto and a Sonneteer Sedley. Not many, but I have found the Lehmann to sound very balanced. Nothing much to criticize. I would have to compare some more maybe, but I am pretty satisfied...
