After being messed around by both Demon and Pipex (both tried to order a 2Meg connection on my line when BT says it can only handle 512Kbps), I decided to go for Freedom2Surf which have much better service levels so far - within 24 hours, they had my line checked for the maximum speed it could handle and have now ordered a 512Kbps connection - date of connection is next Thursday, 7 working days after my order, so I'm happy.

Only problem is, unlike Demon/Pipex etc, they don't provide a Modem/Router. I might just get a Speedtouch 330 off ebay for around £10 but thought I would ask on here first - does anyone have one going spare (preferably with microfilters) than I can buy off them ?

    Cheers,
    batfink.

Bat fink, depending on your computer, if it has ethernet I would seriously suggest you get an ethernet modem, USB modems are ALWAYs inferior, let no one tell you differently.

you can get them from dabs for as little as 20 quid, has to be worth a go?

Unfortunately, that's my current problem. I'm planning to go down the self build route for a new PC in a couple of months, but until then, I'm stuck with my old Celeron 400 laptop which doesn't have any form of network connection (unless I buy a PCMCIA card, which seems pointless if I'm going to upgrade in a couple of months)....

.....hence my reason for trying to get hold of a cheap one to get me going for a couple of months.
