Purchase what you can afford, there are more important things in life than dept.
Incase you didn't realise, this is an audio forum, not a financial advice forum.

So let him be happy to take out finance and stop berating him for it? :)

Theres nothing outrageously wrong with purchasing something on finance, so long as you're responsible and understand what doing so entails.

AFAIC interest free finance for hifi = win! I'd rather have a great hifi for a year and pay a bit on interest, than be stuck with a POS midi for that year and only afterward get the nice hifi... And if you can do that without any interest at all, why on earth not!

Life is short - don't waste it saving up for things! :D

sevenoaks used to do 1 years 0% finance, i bought my first naim system on 0% but had the money to pay it off after a year sat in an isa earning me interest.
i believe that some sevenoaks also stock mf kit too.

Andy, Illuminist didn't say he can't afford to buy the HiFi outright. Merely that he'd prefer to buy with 0% interest option. It's possible that
he wants to keep his money in the bank earning him interest, if he doesn't spend it on something else.

OTOH, borrowing heavily for HiFi? hmmm

it's a good Idea i to borrow at 0% and bank the casdh to pay elsewhere. not sure I'd trust myself not to spend it elsewhere though. of course nothing is free and i guess the 0% is financed somewhere down the line. i can't help thinking one would get a better deal overall for cash.

I expect it's simply added to the final price of items sold at the shop. Which means you're paying for it whether you get finance or not - so may as well get what you pay for!

I only had a second system because I've been sharing a house with three people for the last five years (emphatically NOT recommended) and didn't want to hog the lounge all the time.

However, I'm buying my own flat now, so I no longer need two systems.

The money raised will come in handy of course ;)

It took Dev to clarify what I've emphasised throughout - Blimey, eh? :)

Thanks for the SevenOaks input, it seems I have to enquire at one of their stores. If all goes well it'll be an A5. I'd go for the pre/power set-up though there's not a a grand and a half improvement in sound when I had it demo'd a while back.

0% credit a false economy anyway - if you offer cash for payment in full you should be able to get a bigger discount than 5%

Wrong, its totally illegal for any retailer to offer discounts for cash against the price on finance, and Trading Standards enforce this ruthlessly.

It is possible to open a credit card account with 9 months interest free credit on purchases as well as balance transfers with the NatWest. This would enable you to purchase what you liked where you liked and pay it off without encuring any interest over 9 months. Its nice clearing the balance the week before they start charging.

save yourself 750 and get the new cambridge audio 840c over the A5. eveyrhting the A5 does, but better and with way more flexibility and a silent spinner, the MF is clunky.
