I bought the Early Man CD before the festival and really hated it. I was a teenage metal head in the 80s and it just sounded like a local metal band demo from my youth. I'd forgotten about Brightblack - we were stuck round the side of the stage (near the shop) and couldn't really get comfortable. Music was good but kept reminding me of Califone. Not that that's bad, but I prefer Califone. There was much criticism on www.electrical.com (Albini's studio form) and a pretty weak set of justifications from Dave Pajo about the small number of bands. I dunno - I just felt it was a bit of a 'take' and I'd never felt like that about ATP before. I went in 2003 and hadn't heard of most of the bill, but really enjoyed it so I don't think it was just familiarity. And as for the staring competition....

lol I couldn't be arsed staying up for the staring comp, went to see the arab strap guy DJing but it was so f'in loud you could hear the HF pinging round the room, dunno how anyone could stand being in there. Some of the TV was quite funny though, like the film about the guy whos head turned into a turkey and he went around eating people. Turkish starwars was.... interesting.
