DAC64. Get one s/h for around £1200-1400 and you'd have enough left for a Teac T1 + mods if you believe it makes a difference. Otherwise, DVD player and TOSLink digi out - sorted :)

Edited to add: That Bow player looks awesome :p

Quad + Mana + Omiga + Pra Nang in reverse order Julian.

Failing that, even I like the CDX2 in some ways;)

Personally, I'd stick with Naim for the CD player into your system.

A naked CDX original will show a CD5 with or without Hi-cap a clean pair of heels. Add an XPS and it just gets better. I bet you could find a CDX/XPS combo for not much more than your budget, and the CDX alone will only cost about 1.3k max s/h.

The CDX will also trash the Linn Ikemi into a Naim system.

    merlin,
unfortunately pra-nang is not on the cards at the moment   .

    joel,
there was a 2nd hand dp 60 and a dp 80 + dac that i had my eye on but then i found out how old they were  if i spot a dp 65v for a decent price i'd definately give it a go though.

    michael,
the dac 64 has impressed me every time i've heard it so it's another possibility. the only down side is that it's possibly as far from the aesthetics of the rest of my kit as it's possible to get - all silver and blue leds (are they available in black?) and it would mean more cables and doubt.

    james,
i've admitted that nearly half the reason i want to change is based on looks - the bow just looks the dogs danglies imho. your implication is not really my aesthetic cup of tea. i was thinking about trying a sound stage (or whatever the single supports you can stick on something else are called) but partly what i'm after is some shallow visual gratification which that just won;t give me.
    cheers

    Julian,

Call me shallow, but I'd be tempted to get the Bow player on looks alone, she sure does look purdy!

I was serious about DAC64, apparently many devoted naimies have gone for the DAC64 instead of the rather more extortionately priced Naim players. However, whatever anyone says, you will need to partner it with a decent transport not a cheapie DVD player as transports do make an appreciable difference. Personally though, I'd go for a 1 box solution, and the safe (if rather boring) solution would be to get another Naim player.

You lot are just deluding yourselves, I'm quite shocked that a decent bunch of intelligent guys can possibly think that anything OTHER than a sound card and superdac can even be considered :newbie: why oh why would you even go down the dedicated one box red book route is seriously well beyond my some what very basic comprehension.
You are all fools, how can you possibly think that a dac 64 & optic via m=audio pc card can ever be better (secpt a dvd of coarse) you'll all barking, to show how seriously we take this, we even have a dedicated pc-hifi set up as our reference system forgoing all those nasty horrid sounding black boxes, yes gentlemen the path to enlightenment awaits, we live in exciting times and none more so than sound card heaven roll on my HDD upgrade next week :)

Julian!! SSSCCHHHTTTOOOPPP!! (my best grolsch accent)

    Recognize the symptoms of upgrade-itus.

Put any money aside and ....

    1) get some new music
    2) take your family away on holiday in the summer
    3) go to a few concerts
    4) something else
    5) blah blah.

Your system sounds fine as it is. Be still thy itching wallet!

Ignore Chris, he is clearly delusional.

Can you not stretch the budget?

    hmm

    dunno on the look thing.

''Bow'' tend to be a musical jewellery brand, Id agree.

The top loading bit looks cool.

I like jet black hifi too.

The gold switches look a bit ''MF'' to me though.

    I give it 80% on the chrissy-taste-chartometer.

I wish more of you rich people had heard the LINDEMANN Cd player, which is one of the nicest Ive heard, and it seems no-one else has even heard of it!

Apparently the DAC64 is available in black allthough I've never seen one, not even a photo. Would look awesome in black IMO.

I remain to be convinced that using TOSLink, transports make an appreciable difference with the DAC64. Personally I don't see how it's physically possible given how the DAC64 works but there's not a lot of point in having yet another discussion about it. I really would like to try out some cheapo DVD player and/or CD walkman with TOSLink into my DAC64 to see the results. My DVD player doesn't have TOSLink out and I sold my CD Walkman a while back.

Anyway, even if you think it does make a difference a decent transport doesn't have to cost much. My Teac T1 cost me £200 and there are always a couple for sale at around £200-300. A few mods (clock, PSU, damping etc) might cost another £3-400. Yes, I know I had those mods done but that was when I still believed it would make a difference ;) . OTOH a s/h Tag CDT20R transport (what SCDIB uses for his DAC64) should be available for around £6-800.

I must admit I was thinking of electrical connections.

Exactly, a s/h DAC64 for £1200 and a s/h £800 transport will fit the bill nicely. Oh, and £1 for some cotton wool to put in your ears;)

Gotta be worth investigating the bow player further though.
