Which shifting system do you prefer? If a combo, tell us...
As for me... I voted combo. I have an SRAM trigger left hand and SRAM gripshift (ESP900, soon to be replaced with an X.0 when I get a new cassette and chain) right hand. Soon I will have a shimano-free bike
I've gone for gripshift. I used to have a Marin Sausalito with rapidfire and really liked it but then it was my first bike with indexed gears  When I first got the Sunn Notion I wasn't at all sure about gripshift but once I got used to it I found it very easy to use and if I had to choose, I would go for gripshift again. Can't remember if I've posted a pic of my Sunn on Zerogain. Here it is: I can't go Shimano free 'cos it would mean losing these  :
Shimano thumbies - only 'cos that's what was on my bike (they're ok, but I'd MUCH prefer grip shifts!)
What about people with real bikes (road bikes, not wussy mountain bikes)? :torkmada: Shimano STI Dual Control levers (Ultegra - can't justify Dura Ace) all the way Why is everyone suddenly so down on Shimano? There are only two decent groupset manufacturers in the world: Shimano and Campagnolo. Michael.
On the MTB it's XT rapidfires - can't be doing with gripshifters due to having had failed ones in the past (mud'n'groot). And don't want the brake/shifter combi due to the extra expense if I break them! Road bike has Campag Mirage brake combi thingies, which are absolutely the dog's..
i use a rohloff so the only option is gripshift - it's ok but i'm used to 'clickers' and must say i think i prefer them. still getting used to the gripshift though so too early to say - overall though i'll take the slight awkwardness of a grip in exchange for the major headache i had with deraileurs. cheers julian
Michael - you've not use SRAM then.... I don't like rapidfire on the right hand because for shifting down into a corner takes a single twist on gripshift or three or four separate pushes on a trigger. I like the speed of a trigger shifter on the left hand, but I am missing micro-indexing... edit: And the reason I'm no fan of shimano is their habit of changing things for the sake of change. Perfectly good 6-bolt international standard disc mount... bring out centrelock splined. Perfectly good ISIS standard bottom bracket, bring out octalink with one less spline. No one buying new bits because their current mechs work ok? Make it all go in the other direction (rapid rise). Their stuff works perfectly well although I prefer X.0 stuff over XTR (although I'd probably take an XT mech over an X.9).
Mainly Campag (Veloce) here, but Shimano sprockets (wider spread than the Campag) and cantilevers (wide clearance), levers are Campagnolo Ergo which have tidier cabling than the Shimano and, so I'm told, allow for closer adjustment of the front mech (Daytona triple). All works fine for me
check out this seller on fleabay - 946dale he's sellin gnew bikes dead cheap...shame it's a scam tho....must be..? anyway, I've put a bid on a couple of bikes
I have thumb trigger shifters, but I would much perfer the older type lever (on top of the handle bar) so I could select the gears quicker I find the trigger system slow and cumbersome. Maybe a grip shift is the way to go, but don't you end up changing gears by accident, that would really get on my wick.

lee, i thought the same but when i saw some in the 'flesh' i twigged how they work. i was initially dubious about gripshifts due to rsi / nerve worries as i thought the grip itself would be cheapie crap and i prefer specialized's body geometry grips (which are still pretty cheap but are very comfy). i'm really hoping i get used to the grip shift quickly - i seem to be getting better with it but i still find myself shifting up or down two gears at a time at the moment, especially when i'm braking and unclipping at the same time for a junction or something. cheers julian.
