If you had a 16 month son, you wouldn't have said "he's on solids already", and you would have corrected your mysterious confusion about his precise age at the same time.

They really are making a mockery of this forum sad to say. One of the longest threads you have ever had discusses primarily the identity of a new member - fine trolling I must say.

Of course I haven't. :) Because I don't have the tools or necesary know how I'm still trying to get hold of a tradesperson of some description to do it for me. Thursday probably wouldn't be a good day what with the number of people coming around at the same time, but if you want to put your money where your mouth is, the weekend might be a good time. I'd like to know how you're going to get the base out. :D

I know nothing about building, but can't understand why old houses always have concrete floors on the ground floor (like my old place which never suffered from damp incidentally) and why most newer builds have suspended floors on the ground floor.
Fireplaces are normally held in place with 2-4 brackets on the sides screwed into the wall. If you gently dig round it you'll find them.. Unscrew, and crowbar out. It will pull off some plaster, so you'll have to make good afterwards. And they can be darned heavy!
As for suspended floors, it's much easier to lay one than a concrete one - simply because of drying times and general mess (and cost!).
And because folks are paranoid about damp, as if it's the worst thing in the whole world - our house has no dampcourse, and hasn't for the 350 years it's been standing..
And you can strengthen a suspended floor simply by doubling up the joists, and bracing between them using 2"x1" batten.
Or simply tear it up, lay a dampcourse (i.e bloody big sheet of the appropriate plastic sheet), cover with concrete, level and leave to dry.

so I've convinced. but devil thinks I'm Adam Ant's guitarist, so what chance have I got? :D
You're Marco Pironi?
In that case I saw you on telly t'other day.
You look, erm, bigger than back in the day :D

Mike,

Thai women are nothing to do with this thread (unfortunately) - stop making trouble. I am not going to spell things out. There is no defensiveness - just incredulity. Staements can also be opinions - they are called staements of opinion!

I suggest everyone stop accusing Rudy - its an issue for the moderators if at all.

Nick.
