Fireplaces are normally held in place with 2-4 brackets on the sides screwed into the wall. If you gently dig round it you'll find them.. Unscrew, and crowbar out. It will pull off some plaster, so you'll have to make good afterwards. I know nothing about building, but can't understand why old houses always have concrete floors on the ground floor (like my old place which never suffered from damp incidentally) and why most newer builds have suspended floors on the ground floor.
