I suspect I'll need to buy a decent DAC and (perhaps) a decent power supply for the SB before it replaces the Arcam. I noticed that TB has been very happy with his Transporter. Perhaps that is what I really want:D.

IIRC, we compared a couple of transports into your DAC a while ago and even though the dedicated transports were "better" than the SB there wasn't much between them. With another DAC who knows until we try it. As for convenience, what more needs to be said?

I'll vouch for that. The convenience makes it so much more pleasant to just sit and listen. Or just stick it on random while doing the ironing (although it does seem to rather like pink floyd).

    Of course!

Once you have your music ripped, there is no reason not to have a squeezebox in every room in the house (well, maybe not that one:eek: )

Small and simple rules - congratulations on a lovely setup.

    dev,
that was with my old squeezebox 1 which had nasty jitter issues with flac playback. the 2 and 3 are much better in this respect.
i currently use my old sb1 in my bedroom system with my old b&o kit and it sounds great.
it'll be a subtle thing but give it a month or 2 and you'll wonder wy you've still got hte arcam.
a decent dac and psu will just speed up the process.
    cheers

    julian.

I'm looking into the PSU question currently...

Also going to be rationalising the cabling of my system once I get my room layout finalised.

However, first on the list of things to buy is the NAS drive so I can FLAC the whole lot!

isaac - no need for the expense of a nas i use a p2 400 with some big drives in it. 20 quid for the pc and 80 for a 400mb usb drive (less if you go internal i would think). way less than a funky nas.

Julian, I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I know some people don't like to leave their PC on and for them the NAS will make sense (some NAS can run slim server). I thought like you and added a 500GB SATA drive to my PC. Unfortunately it cost me around £150 rather than £80.

Julian - I don't want to cart around a USB drive hanging off my laptop, and running a desktop machine would double the power consumption of my house (I paid £44 for electricity for the last quarter). A NAS is almost silent and low-powered.

Looks great! I've really gotta get me one of these.

    1 question (for now), What's a NAS?

Just one point to note. Slimserver is generally not included with the NAS. These people seem to include it though. I understand GSRAI has bought his SB and NAS from them and was very happy with their service.

The link I used didn't include it. TS101s with slimserver are available from other sources.

Have any of you guys had an issue with installing slimserver under ubuntu? It fails for me due to size mismatch.:grrr:

Which version of Ubuntu are you using Dev?

I'm running ClarkConnect on my server, but I'm currently messing around with Ubuntu (EdgyEft) on a spare machine, so I could try a Slimserver install if it would help.

Thanks David. I'm currently ruinning 6.10, but can quite happily go back to 6.06LTS.

BTW, the slimdevices website does mention size mismatch errors and instructs users on how to downgrade the affected modules but it did not work for me. Size mismatch always sounds dodgy to me, like someone not keeping up with a version change or a corrupt file.

WiFi sucks. About 6m away from the WAP and the signal strength varies from 2 to 25%. Absolutely useless for streaming :grrr:.

Works ok for me, except when someone else on the street turns on his wireless too. However, I have a fairly old WAP so might change to a draft N1 which might solve it (works much better than various G WAPs did in my parent's house).

    I get 85-99% signal strength.
