LACK Rack mk II

i'm a slow worker but i will do. it's supposed to look like technobear's but in birch - that's all ikea seem to do.
incidentally, checked on site for stock of both the expedit bookcase and lack in beech - it said both in stock, but when i got there....

yeah, thats a shame - what I don't like about them is that they seem to do some items in specific colours but I wanted some stuff that just about matched from different ranges - they weren't available in the same colours...!

Ignorant hi fi and music lover needs help!

Been busy with the tools again today

Before my dumb questioning commences may I say I think this looks bloody brilliant - and I want it!

Please excuse my thickness (bit new at this 'special shelf' stuff) but is this a bunch of coffee tables that you've progressively sawn the legs off?
And is that a granit chopping board as well?
Is a glass chopping board any good? They're ultimately cheaper and I'm somewhat broke - however, fifteen squid for a nice looking piece of granite over a 'magic block of wood' from Russ 'no stranger to outrageous profit' Andrews costing 1 grand per square inch is a mighty attractive proposition!

Those spikes look great, are they expensive and where from?
Do squash balls cut in half cut the mustard?

I look forward to your audiophilic wisdom in all it's glory.

Thanks.

PS: I'm shit at DIY so would not attempt to construct anything myself. Even been getting jittery about the prospect of trying to cut squash balls into perfect halves!

these any good? At £6 a pair they're a bargain if they're any good.

Actually getting really 'must have it now' pangs as I've been sitting around all day and drooling at stuff I want to get. Am off to Ikea in Croydon. May the force be with me and that I make decent choices! Sod it - i can always just browse a bit!

Welcome.....and welcome to the world of vibration control...

the answers to your questions (IMO) would be...

1) yes its a choppind board 9.99 from tescos....just bought a couple my self.

2) No, I wouldn't use glass.....it rings.

3) spikes are availlable easily from e bay....audio supports(can't remeber how much).....or you could experiment with largish ball bearings as some of us have been.

4) Squash balls are ok.....spikes/ball bearings are better (IMO of course).

any other views?

Mathias, try a combination isolation platfrom made out of a variesty of componants.....rubber sheet, mdf, granite, slate + steel.

They will each have their one vibration frequencies...so will help to balance each other out.

you could also try a half inflated (well, so that each component sits about 1cm from the shelf) 9 inch inner tube...that works well...cheap too!

The tables are IKEA LACK tables with the legs carefully shortened.

The spikes are made by Monacor.

The slab under the table is a 600x600x30mm concrete paving slab sprayed with Satin Black Plastikote.

The Tesco granite chopping boards do have their uses and are nicely finished but are only 40x30cm.

The Asda granite chopping boards are not as well polished and are more grey than black but at 40x35cm are handily bigger and also a tad thicker which might be better for speaker duties.

No need to cut squash balls in half. Just place them in castor cups.

I have recently finished my lack rack and will post pics tomorrow. i think it looks wonderful even though it has squash balls cut in half...

One more thing that isn't clear from the photos is that there is a tiny blob of Blu-tak under each spike cup to hold them firmly in place. Only a tiny blob mind, if you use too much it will squish out over time.

what a nightmare I had trying to cut squash balls in half ....but if you can make some wooden cups that will take the balls ..this will be nearly as effective as the inner tube thing....

I tried the inner tube thing ..never really did it for me ....

An interesting thought has just occurred......

Do you need [rhetorical question] to get over a certain threshold of performance or resolution before these tweaks become audible...

I know davidf wont mind me saying that when I first went to see him ..his kit didn't sound great ....but that same kit after a bit of sorting started to sing ...so if we had tried some of the techniques early on I'm doubting if they would have been heard ?

just a thought !
