Lol, you can't really think that hand painted black baffle box with B&Q edging strip looks better than the cute ProAcs?
 
Yes. The DIY Tannoy boxes are far more appealing - fitness for purpose and all that.

The same way I like lathes, milling machines, steam locomotives (esp. the O.Bulleid 'Austerity' Q-class) and old drawing/cartography/surveying instruments- it's all about purpose, and so often happens to result in an appropriate aesthetic. A consequence, not a starting point - always more satisfactory in the long run.

Ps - this is also exactly why shiny i-shit absolutely does not endure: It's all about look, not functionality - which will move on.

Meanhwhile, a dial phone - an interface over 140yrs old - still looks/works 'right'

I sold them on - in fact it's the shortest time I've ever owned a audio product, I had them just six days! I bought them as a stop gap as I'd gone too long with no speakers in that system, then predictably as soon as I'd landed them a decent pair of Golds turned up locally. I liked the ProAcs; very clear and open, surprisingly big and dynamic sounding too given the titchy bass-mid (well, mid!) driver, though they do that small speaker thing of exaggerating the lead instrument i.e. life-sized sax, trumpet, guitar or vocal with a half-sized backing band. I know I'll be branded a heretic, but I'd have liked to hear them with a very good sub.

The Tannoys are not pretty, in fact the picture flatters them, they are in a solidly made but rudimentary DIY York cab, it's just varnished block-board and the cabs are quite beat-up too. They sound great though and I only paid what the drivers alone are worth (if that), so I'm not too bothered by the aesthetics. I do most of my listening late on with the light off so it's no real issue anyway. The drivers and cabs were brought together by the previous owner, the drivers apparently came out of a pair of Lancasters, he got hold of these old DIY York cabs elsewhere. I'm having some posh crossovers made so they should sound pretty amazing soon.

nothing wrong with the cabs tony, i still have a spare tannoy ils 12" dual concentric units no cabs at some stage i might get steve to buid some out of the way cabs for them, i have c.o.'s

Not sure about that:D. I followed Cooky's advice and put the resisters that Simon left me in series and I think I can live with them now:). The bad news is that one of the bass drivers seems knackered. With deep bass there is quite pronounced buzzing like noise:(. You need to turn the volume up very high to get to that stage though. I only did it to see if the sound hardened like before.

Take the driver out and see if anything is pressing against the cone, and check the push on tags.
Can't be much given the huge power handling of those bass units.
 
Here's my current small box beating wall of sound.



Next up replace the now drawfed Tannoy 15" GRFs with proper tapped sub horns.

No small or large box can sound like these.

Size matters
