New Speaker Recommendations - £3.5k-£4.5k

Thanks Coda II.

Let me add the Heed Envoy (a bit under budget at 3,150 quid) to the list of suggestions.

Does this mean you have (finally) made your own decision on speakers then, Markus?

(Sorry - have not been keeping up with all the threads about it on PFM!)

Thanks everybody for your answers so far on this thread. It gives me a pretty good idea of some of the better stuff out there in the price range. I will add to that list some speakers that are perhaps more popular outside the forum and those that come from the market leading brands, eg. :

Acoustic Energy AE3
Art Expression
ATC ?
Eclipse TD 712z
Focal JMLab Micro Utopia Beryllium
KEF ?
Proac ?
Morduant Short Perf 6

Steve

I think TD10 are £5K a pair.

The TD10 is £3739.99 - see here http://www.jrsystems.co.uk/index.asp?product=5&make=29

With that much money to spend, I would be expecting a full-range loudspeaker system - like I have now only quite a bit better at double the cost.

I think my first port of call would be something like a Velodyne DD12 (c. £2350) with the room correction software.

I would then need a suitable standmount. Naturally Dynaudio would be on my list as I love my Contour 1.1's.

Would then need a standmount in the £1000 - £2000 range.

Dynaudio Focus 140
Dynaudio Contour 1.4S
ProAc Response 1SC
ATC Active 10
Acoustic Energy AE1 mkIII
JMlab Electra 1007 Be (in budget with a DD10 instead of DD12)

Dali Helicon 400 or 800 would fit the budget - They have reduced their prices a bit recently, sound great and have superb finish on the cabinets.

I can shed a bit of light on this one as they are my companies' product. I have grown very fond of them over the last six months or so but I would say that they are a bit of a slow burner- you don't notice some of their skills until you change to something else. They resolve and soundstage brilliantly and are quite forgiving of poor material as well. Beauty is of course subjective but in the Granite finish, I think they look brill.
Reviews have been pretty good across the board and I would encourage a listen if you can.

So, the £3,500 to £4,500 group seems to be a nice little segment with quite a variety of interesting approaches to speaker design and I'll be happy to launch my offering in this esteemed company. I'm sure that mine won't better the competition in all areas but hopefully they will excel in some - and they're prettier than most (shades of Mohammed Ali) :D

BTW, does anyone know if any of the products in this range are actually selling?

Steve

What is your system, your room size and taste in music? What preferences for exisiting speakers do you have?

bbv, I feel sure 7v is just wondering what the top competitors to his new babies will be, instead of wanting to buy speakers..

Did you not read the start of the thread?

BB and I have communicated by PM so that's cleared up.

To return to the topic of speakers that retail between £3,500 and £4,500, does anyone have any evidence that sales are actually occuring in this sector? It would be nice to know before I take my kids to visit Father Christmas this year. ;)
