I've never understood why they released "She's lost control" over "Atmosphere" either - although the Unknown Pleasures mix is far better than the single one IMHO.

BTW - those ES14s (now revarnished after one's fall!) and new amps, cranked up loud, scared the sh** out of me when I stuck "Atmosphere" on - Tony's right - that drum kit sounded amazing!

Is it only this black label american import that sounds brilliant on Attomsphere or does the Facus 2 UK version sound as good? It does sound very good on 12" but my system is not as good as yours but its better than CD.

The US cut is far more dynamic than the UK one. The UK one is still very good, but the US one is simply astounding.

Tony.

PS Dom, what new amp did you buy?

I bet the difference between systems isn't AS far as you think, you know :)

Either way, your vinyl, as you say, will easily cream the CD version!

I'd love to know what they did to "Transmission" off of the CD soundtrack of "24 hour party people" though - it sounds like it's been reverbed and compressed...

I have just received a near mint copy of the US pressing of the Atmosphere 12" (£10 incl Airmail!) and quickly compared it to the UK 12" and the 1988 7" (FAC213) release. Thanks to Tony for recommending it, as it is indeed far more dynamic than either of the UK cuts, which gives more punch to drums and greater tremor to keyboards and vocals, i.e. even more Atmospheric!
It may have been separately produced as well as engineered, as on both UK cuts the first keyboard chords are outside of the left 'speaker but the US has them nearly central. Surprisingly, given the difference in dynamics, the US pressing of Atmosphere uses less of the available vinyl than the UK... not such a Prime Cut from ol' Porky after all?!

The US issue had She's lost control as the A side and had black labels instead of white, its also a far more dynamic cut – it really is an great sounding record, the drums on Atmosphere are simply astounding and leap out of the speakers in a way the UK copy misses. It is very rare indeed, I've only seen a handful of copies(one of which is my own), and I've known about it since it came out so have always been on the lookout!
The UK issue of Atmosphere was originally pressed on the 'accidental' dark red vinyl that the first pressing of Unknown Pleasures was; both look black unless you hold them up to a strong light where they glow dark red / purple. (I have one of each, both purchased when they came out).
I'd say a UK first press was worth a tenner in good shape, the US one well over 20-30 to those in the know.
Tony.

When I next to come into some money (i.e when I get a job) I will be buying that single. I want to see what the fuss is all about for myself. I am not sure if I can trust a lot of ebay sellers though as the US verison a lot of traders seem to selling are the UK version I have.

FWIW, mine was an eBay purchase from a Yank who did not really know what he was selling, hence the low, low price!
Before you buy check that the pictures show black labels and '...Control' on top on the rear of the sleeve, or ask those questions.
Thanks again TonyL!

My pricing is but a guesstimate ââ'¬â€œ I have never seen an ââ'¬Å"officialââ'¬Â price for this record. I'm guessing purely on experience of not finding it often at all despite always knowing it exists and actively looking for it. Many record dealers seem unaware it even exists so probably wouldn't notice the difference from the UK cut. In the UK I'd certainly say it was far, far rarer than say the Fast label Earcom 2 12ââ'¬Â which has the JD tracks Autosuggestion and From Safety To Where which is an 'established collectable'. The thing I don't know is how many were pressed in the US, so have no idea on it's true rarity in the global market. I'd say a tenner for a mint one is a real bargain though ââ'¬â€œ it is a superb record, and from a collectors perspective is the first 12ââ'¬Â issue, so will be the one the true JD completist would want, should they find out it exists!

Tony.

Slightly off topic and its not exactly rare but I have just bought the original 1981 release of Ceromoney. It is a UK pressing but the record is extremely punchy, the bass is so strong I almost wish I had tone controls to turn it town because next door will be going mad.

I guess the trick to finding the american JD record is to look on the american ebay and pay the airmail shipping fees.

Slightly off topic and its not exactly rare but I have just bought the original 1981 release of Ceremony.

The one with the green cover? There are two versions of the Ceremony 12ââ'¬Â, the green one was the first, it was later followed with one with a white / blue cover. Both have identical catalogue and date info on the label, though are totally different recordings. IIRC Barnie plays guitar on the 'green' one and Gillian on the 'white / blue' one. The green one is IMHO far, far better, the later white one just doesn't work somehow, though seems to be the more collectable. I bought both when they came out.

Tony.

This is the green one known as G1. The collectable bit has made me think I should buy the white version too :p

Is the 1982 Temptation 12" worth anything? I bought that this morning too, again for £5.

Pobsession.

Hi again TonyL,
Regarding Ceremony I have the bronze sleeved 7", would you happen to know which recording that is?
As for the established collectables, I used to own most of them apart from the Sordide Sentimentale (which I missed on eBay a while ago, before I got the knack of sniping, for well under £50!).
Earcom2 and the Factory Sample EP are well worth having and I may start looking to buy them again.

AmazingTrade,
I got the US 12" by searching on eBay.co.uk for ' "Joy Division" Atmsophere ' in titles and descriptions in the Music...Records category for items available to the UK. Luckily it was a lot quicker to click and enter those selections than to type them here!
:)

The earlier and better one.

If it went for under 50 quid it has to have been pretty easily identified by most punters as a bootleg. It is a widely pirated item, so buyer beware. A real one will make a hell of a lot more than that even on a bad day.

Earcom2 and the Factory Sample EP are well worth having and I may start looking to buy them again.

Currently I've got Transmission, Eacrom 2, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Atmosphere (US), Unknown Pleasures (dark red 1st press), Closer (1st press), Still (1st press), Warsaw (bootleg of RCA demos), Preston 28th February 1980 (purple vinyl live LP) and the Heart and Soul CD box. So I think I have every studio recording in some format.

I'd love to find a complete Factory Sample at a reasonable price and I'm also after a mint 'hessian sleeve' copy of Still; mine was bought when it came out but I was too broke to pay the extra for the Ltd Ed sleeve!

One of my friends has possibly the ultimate JD collectable; an original 7ââ'¬Â of An Ideal For Living which he got fully signed by the band when they played Erics! The record alone is worth about 150 quid, and one signed by Curtisââ'¬Â¦

Tony.

PS If you want some good background on the band try Deborah Curtis's book Touching From A Distance. A very interesting read.

I've got that book and I have to say it is probably 1000 times more accurate than 24hpp.

As you probably know it is also being turned into a hollywood film although it will be produced and filmed in Manchester.

Mine was the hessian sleeve job. Sold it about 20 years ago when I was a poor student. What an arse.

There has been quite a lot of media coverage over this but a lot of has been Manchester centered

Guys - what does hessian look like?

I've got the bog-standard version, but I only paid 2 quid in MVE and it's nigh-on mint, barring some spine fading :)

The hessian sleeve version was the bog standard album incased in a hardback book style sleeve which was covered in grey hessian (a sort of hard wearing cloth), the record being held in by means of a white ribbon. I still have my copy, has anyone any idea of it's worth?
