Shockingly good things from bands you didn't oughta like

PS: How do you think your prospective customers will think of any recommendations you make for them now?

I don't recommend them music ... some of them may even listen to Jazz for all I know ( :) for any prospective customers out there ... that's a joke of course ).

Getting back to Sting bashing....Stewart Copeland summed him up well in an interviiew I saw once, and I quote:

" Fame didn't change Sting at all......
He was an arsehole even before he became famous! "

Mind you, Sting and Stewart were known to throw punches at each other backstage and anyone who's game enough to take on someone with Stewarts "reach" must get some respect. Sting was a good songwriter in his heyday.

I'll top the lot - Sam Fox's "I surrender (to the spirit of the night)" - classic 80s cheese with pretty decent production. Also sounds great on a topflight Naim system, as I found to my cost one rainy Saturday when Ian in Audio-T (Reading) stuck it on the shopfloor system. People actually seemed to dig it too - weird!

Copeland got on so well with Sting, that he wrote "F**k of you C**t" on the skins of his drumkit.

I didn't really think I could go much lower but, like a limbo champion, I pulled one out of the bag and managed to find a copy of London Boys' "Twelve Commandments of Dance" amongst my compact discs. Anyone (dare to) remember 'London Nights'? Oh my me.

I should change the thread title to "Shocking things from bands that Goomer likes".

PS. totally OT - I gave the Quo album to my Aunt - she absolutely loved it. A friend of mine worked with them recently doing some PR work and got them to sign it for her. My Aunt was made up. I also heard a story about one of them which I can't put here in case I get sued.

I'm starting to wonder if I actually have any respectable albums in my collection now.

Glad your Aunt liked the LP. (you just wont admit the autographs were really for you)

I remember their "Requiem" track - got it on "Greatest hits of 1989" ;)

It could be worse though - you could have Bros...

He he - the thing is, "Too much" is actually an OK track, and "Cat among the pidgeons" wasn't all bad either. I never forgave my mate for giving me Bros' "Push" in 1988 for my birthday (I got rid soon after - which I NEVER normally do with presents), so I retaliated with Yazz' "Wanted" for his chrimbo pressie. Ha ha!

On which, "Fine time" isn't a bad track...

I actually feel physically sick reading this thread.

Dom/Goomer, I reccomend you sell your hifi's and invest in a pair of headphones!

I think the expression is "A problem shared is a problem halved".

I also like Albert Ayler. Go figure.

now this is slightly OT as i dont listen to it but heck, seeing as one or two folks have gotten on the couch and fessed up to the councillor that is the ZG massive.........

somewhere, in a box at the back of my dads attic rests an immaculate (read hardly played) vinyl version of

5 Star - Silk and Steel...........

i truly cant recall but tbh i dont even think i can claim it was an unwanted gift.......

there, said it, suddenly i feel free.............

There's a couple of OK tracks on that 5-Star album. Don't panic though, I don't own ANY 5-Star unless it's on a compilation (the (s)Hits series were prone to that - he he!)

Another guilty secret from my teenage years was a liking for Cat Stevens. My landlady had an old best of tape with drop outs on it. I loved it, but not something to fess up to especially then (this was late 80s studentdom after all).

I'd forgotten all about him pretty much until today at lunchtime rifling through the rack at the BHF shop - came across a minty Tea for the Tillerman for 99p - Blimey what a good record - astonishingly good recording too. Real 3D stuff and the dynamics on Hard Headed Woman when he goes off on one would be a pretty good system test I reckon
