Do you have a spare/second computer anywhere you can try installing slimserver on?

This would help work out if the problem is your computer, or something else.

Also, does it work if you connect the squeezebox to the router via a cable?

Let's not get carried away over the network yet before we fix the PC. If the web browser won't connect to SlimServer on the SAME PC, then something is seriously and fundamentally wrong with the PC or the SlimServer. It has nothing to do with the router because local network traffic doesn't leave the PC.

Only when we have the browser talking to the SlimServer on the SAME PC, should we then look elsewhere for problems.

    So far:

    SlimServer appears to be running.
SlimServer appears to be listening on port 9000.
The Windows firewall has been disabled and no other firewalls are running.
The web browser won't connect to http://localhost:9000/

    Questions:

Can the web browser view web pages on the Internet from this PC?

If it can, that kind of rules out a network or TCP/IP problem.

If it can't then the PC's networking software is probably damaged and will need a reconfigure or reinstall.

Thats why I suggested installing slimserver on another PC.

The router suggestion is because the squeezebox isn't connecting to the network either, so there must be two problems here, wiring to the router will establish whether the wireless card in the Squeezebox has failed, if it has, fixing the PC side still won't completely solve the problem.

If the wireless card has failed would it still display the available networks?

No, if it had failed, it wouldn't find anything at all.

If its displaying the networks but not connecting, that would imply a problem with your wireless network rather than the squeezebox itself.

Does the Squeezebox say it can't find the network or that it can't find SlimServer?

You haven't inadvertently turned off DHCP on the router have you? This would mean that the PC and SB are not being given IP addresses.

Are you using WEP? If so, does the SB have the right key?

Twin-aerial routers throw and good signal fore and aft but not much out to the sides. Consider this when positioning your router. This caused me problems when I first had an SB.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do I check if I have turned off DHCP
No, I am not using wep. The signal has never been a problem.

Running out of ideas here. If the network is OK in every other respect but you still cannot connect the browser to SlimServer on the same PC and there is no firewall geting in the way then SlimServer would appear to be at fault.

As for DHCP, I access my Belkin router through the web browser. LAN Settings is the first item on the menu at the left. DHCP on/off is in the LAN settings. Here you will also find the IP address of the router (inwards to your network), and the range of IP addresses from which to assign addresses to PCs, SBs, etc. as they connect.

The next menu option is DHCP client list and this will show you all the connected devices.

The only other thing you might conceivably have wrong is the channel number or SSID. There is also the possibility that you have interference from a neighbour on the chosen channel although if web surfing seems normally fast then probably not. That wouldn't stop SB altogether anyway but it might make it skip.

If you have an unsecured network (i.e. you are not using WEP, you should check the client list occasionally to make sure no one else is using your network.

I have decided to do a complete re-installation of the wireless network to see if this works. I have just found a new wireless network in my road and it may be that this has caused my problems. My computer is in need of a spring clean in any event so I might as well start from scratch.

If this doesn't work I'ii just have to go back to playing cd's in the kitchen.

thanks for all the replies so far and I will let you know my progress.

I have re-installed the network. The SB is asking for the ip address for slimserver. I am not sure how to obtain this.

I have changed the channel on the wireless network but it is looking like it was the nod32 anti-virus software that was causing problems. This was working fine before.

Start : Control Panel : Network Connections : Wireless Network Connection

    Select the 'Support' tab.

The IP address is displayed there.

Note that if you switch on the PC and SB in reverse order, the router may not give them the same IP addresses - they might be swapped.

Thanks found the IP address. Can't find sb instructions. How do you delete unwanted numbers from the ip address?

Forget the last post, I had a doh moment. Its been a long day.

Is there a way of restoring the SB to its original factory settings?

I still cannot connect to slimserver although the SB is finding the netwoks both wireless and wired. Slimserver is running btw.

LOL  I was tripped up by that one when I tried to change my SSID. Try overwriting the unwanted end characters with spaces.

Are you now able to connect to SlimServer with the browser?

The SB is definately connecting to the wireless network. The problem seems to be the slimserver software not loading properly. I can now open slimserver but it is not connecting with the sb

It might be worth loading up an older version as an experiment. Can someone point me to a download.

You could always try putting a CD into a CD player.

Just another option for you to consider.

Andrew, thanks for you offer. A couple of versions or so ago would do. It may have nothing to do with the version but it does seem strange that the latest version seems not to load properly.

    Garyi

Whats a cd or a cd player, is this something my parents would know about?
