Well I have 4-6 pints during the week and 7-8 at weekend. However I tend to drink a lot of real organic beer, which is about 4.6%.

In fact a lot of those pints are actually bottles, but 5% volume. There is no way I get to close to 30, 25 would be an extreme amount. I know it is still a lot though, I am not making any excuses :).

You can beat the peer pressure in the pub, I always ordered coffee and water and it's not long before you get left alone. It usually means you're in demand to do the driving of course. I was always happy to play as long as they didn't mind rotating which cars we took.

Once people have had two or three drinks they don't usually care that much about what's in your glass, they're too busy talking 5h1te!

Afraid not... Was wondering when you'd notice that.

I'm a similar age to you and I recently hit the same thing, where it was obvious I needed to do something to combat sideways growth. I blame canteen lunches.

So, according to anquet mapping, today's ride was 24.5 miles, taking in 2000ft of climbing (a lap of the hereford beacon), in hot humid conditions (akin to riding in a sauna). I'm on holiday this week... the ride was to counteract the barbecues held on saturday, sunday, monday and yesterday, all washed down with much beer (and the odd glass of wine).

Riding a bike will give general condition and good tone in legs (and upper body if you're doing proper mountain biking, if you're just pottering along roads and canal towpaths you won't get this), but it won't flatten your stomach. For that you need to do situps and leg lifts.

Walking rather than taking the bus is good... In southampton I found it was quicker to walk the 2.2 miles from my digs to town than to catch the bus. There was also no bus to uni, which was 1.4 miles (and 140ft climb), so I'd typically walk 4-6 miles a day while I was a student.

Making a good start now is important. If you can keep in shape now, it will be easier to do so later.

bmi is a flawed measure as it takes no account of muscle mass - a lot of pro athletes would be obese by that measure as would most pro body builders.

On a totally un-PC note you could, as I did, convince yourself that you are anorexic. One of the symptoms of which is that when you look in a mirror you always see a fat bastard no matter what weight you are.

depends on where you live and where abouts you drink - a local bar could charge you about 2:50 where as a trendy wine bar in london could charge almost double that?

I think the probability of something happening to AT is probably 100%, who knows tomorrow he might get a letter, or on Friday he may be propositioned by an attractive young lady.

Meaning that based on an average of £2.50, 25 pints a week is £62.5 a week, over £3,000 a year ...
I took a 3-week vacation with my wife this winter in Vietnam, sleeping in the best hotels, and it did not cost me that much.
This, plus the hazard to your health, is ample reason to quit.
And you can afford one of the best bikes on the market ...
    You know it makes sense

My local area ranges between £1.60 to £2.80 depending on the brand of beer and what type of bar it is.

In Manchester city centre £2.50-£2.60 is average for the faceless chains, wetherspoons is around £2-£2.20 but I tend to drink in a famous little pub which is not a free house, the beer is organic and its about £1.70 a pint.

Also I some times drink in Scream bars and pubs where it is about £1.40 a pint with a yellow card.

In the awful old man pubs you can get pints for £1.20 but these places are so dire its not worth it.

For the record I spend between £25-£40 on booze and that includes meals. I know exactly where to get BOGOFF deals etc. I could never spend £60 a week on drink/going out.

I like 'old man pubs', they tend to have at least some character. You meet some very interesting (but often odd) people in such pubs.

No good for picking up birds of course, unless you like 'em wrinkly:D
