Zip is surprisingly CRAP at compressing music!

But anyway, yeah FLAC is great. I would have quoted how much space 1000 albums would take in that but I didn't know the compression ratio.

You can assume an average album is 600mb. 1000 albums = 600GB or compressed with FLAC (lossless) about 150GB.

MP3, at any compression rate, is BAD as far as audiophiles are concerned. Stay away from it at all costs.

I've found zip to be crap with MOst things, with it only taking a small percent off which tends not to be worth the effort.

The technology is coming together to provide all this functionality, but at the moment there is no one-box-solution that would keep an audiophile happy - and I don't think there ever will be.

Not even if each top HiFi brand were to develop its own product. The purists would still claim that a dedicated 2ch system is sonically superior. It's likely they'd be right, but then it becomes more a matter of personal taste.

I use my PC for video editing as well as managing my music for the portable. The SL300i let's me play my own movies and music files, see digital camera stills. I can stream video from the net and listen to internet radio. All this is done through a wireless router.

With HDD technology why does it need to be limited to 2 channel? but yes, I certainly see the realm of audio going this way.

There's no reason why the old and new technologies can't co-exist. I'm sure that some HiFi enthusiasts would even consider the uncompressed files good enough to be a main source. Done well this technology could breath life back into the mid-price HiFi market.

Sub £1000 CD players have had a rough ride the last few years with the onslaught of AV. It's high time that HiFi fought back with something really new and fresh not just an update of the same model lines from the last 20 yrs. Who better than the Regas, Myriads, Cyrus's (sp) etc to produce a HD version of a Linn Classik.
