Vintage Tannoys

Those speakers look, and without doubt sound, absolutely superb. There's something intrinsically right and satisfying about a big bluff wooden enclosure for a speaker.

Thanks Joel, and yes they do sound rather good :)

You are absolutely right wrt big bluff wooden enclosures. There is a real market need for such things IMO, preferably with a nice big efficient main driver, simple crossover and bass alignment suitable for use near walls. Such things needn't cost silly money either.
The only things that spring to mind in the uk are the AudioNote speakers and the Word Design kit speakers.

Hi Guys,
I'm interested in trying some old Tannoys but havn't a clue what to go for, and more importantly - how much they are worth.

I would never get away with the ugly boxes that these speakers come in, so would either build new boxes or clad them with MDF (painted white with black grills). I'm pretty sure i could make an ugly standmount into a modern'ish, good looking floorstander.
Is there anything on Ebay (or anyware else) worth a punt? I on noticed some Devons and Stuart gold monitors. Are they any good?

I wouldn't want to spend more than £600, but would go a little higher if it was worth it.

There are some nice Chesters for sale in the classifieds from some bloke named Rob ;)

Devons are lovely, but the Devons on ebay are going to need their surrounds replacing at some point as they look like ageing originals. You might like to consider these:

I have a pair of these and I think they're bloody marvellous, and I reckon you could get these for less than £200. Ugly tho', they may be.... :).

I agree, and in my opinion the DMT studio monitors sound better than the monitor golds I have heard.

Well, i emailed the seller two days ago and havn't had a reply yet. I said i wasn't prepared to pay for them before seeing the drivers and asked if he could arrange cash on delivery (he lives in Scotland)

Does anyone know how long i should wait and what the ebay rules are in this case? I'll be amazed if it isn't a scam.

TBH if I was the seller there's no way on earth I'd send off £500's worth of speakers plus the cost of a courier without first receiving payment, so I think he's in the right if he decides that he doesn't want to offer cash on delivery.

It's your responsibility as a buyer to know what you're buying before you bid, you can't grumble about the drivers if you didn't find out about them before you put your bid in.

Mind you, if they are monitor golds in good condition (which they might well be) then you could sell them on for more (if you do buy them) just by taking them out of those hideous boxes.

I'd agree with la toillette on this one. If I was selling a pair of large and expensive to send items like a pair of speakers and the buyer told me cash on delivery and only after inspection all the way from Scotland. I think you would find them back on sale. The probability of something going tits up wth such an arrangement are extremely high.

I think i may have explained myself wrong. I thought couriers could act as a "middle man". The speakers would be delivered to me and i would pay the courier. Is this not possible?

It said in the listing title "Tannoy stuart 12" golds"
I assumed that meant they were 12" golds.

The truth is, i was excited at the thought of getting some golds at a reasonable price and in hindsight, i should have been a bit more careful.

If the guy is genuine, i'm sure he will email me, even if it's to tell me to **** off!

Thanks for the help guys. . . .
