Hi Joel, they look like a pair of back loaded horns?

    Now that's a bargain!

What could you get new for £280 today?

That does indeed look like a backloaded horn. I'd not seen or heard of these before, either. Apparently a 60th anniversary special, and almost certainly only sold in Japan at the time.
Let's not forget that Tannoy's sole market for the real speakers was for many, many years Japan only.

They where a limited edition Rear loaded horn job to commemorate Ronald Hastings Rackham from a design found in his desk apparently.

    cool!

It would be fun to knock a pair up with some MDF and one of those Tannoy-esque drive units... forgotten the name, anyone remember? - It looks like a Tannoy dual concentric 15", but not made by Tannoy, and a lot cheaper...

Nothing that's even remotely as good. If you wanted new speakers, you'd have to spend serious money to get close to these.

No small driver audiophile speaker can match the scale and effortlessness, and would struggle to have the superb coherence, transparency, and detail resolution.

 That really is a fantastic buy, great find, I'd be well happy to pick up a pair for that. I picked up my System 10 DMT's for a miserly £134 off fleabay, so there are great bargains out there to be had, but although the 10's are great I'd still trade them in towards a pair of 12's....so if you ever feel the need to downsize :D.....

yeah, building stuff, but I just like playing with stuff. Im like a kid when it comes to speakers, I always like them, more than any other component :)

    NB
Neil, you got a steal for £280. You should be quids in if you sell the Proacs.. although I think you'll keep them too, just in case if I know you! :)

LGMs have arrived though sadly in a rather sorry state.

My own fault as it was a collect only sale and I arranged a courier to collect, however the packing really was appalling and the worst I've seen. Boxes barely larger than the speaker and no padding.
They have clearly been thrown around as the cabinets have an assortment of dents and chips, and the crossovers have been knocked loose and are flapping around inside the cabinets.
Thankfully the seller put a wooden board under the grill to protect the drivers.

I've dismantled them and it looks like I can put them right - nothing is actually broken just lots of bits dislodged.
Oh well, suppose I now have an excuse to put some posh veneer on the cabinets.....

Pics tomorrow when I sort the damage and calm down.

I'm really sorry to hear that Rob. These are great speakers and as long as the drivers are OK, it may be a blessing in disguise. Now you have an excuse to build a pair of LARGE cabinets.

But first walk away and get a drink or 2 to calm down.

    Hi Rob,

That is a big PITA, and no doubt killed the fun of having the arrive.

However, as you said, its an excuse to tart them up, perhaps also replace old caps while you are in there.

Does the cabinet still seem structurally sound?

Cheers guys, Guiness is at hand as I type.

I've checked them over and there is no lasting damage.
it looks like the courier has dropped one of them face down onto the floor which put pressure on the front mounted controls and detached the crossovers inside. This also broke the glue holding the components to to the board so several were just waving around. Thankfully the front controls are solid brass pins so no damage - had they been the older switches I'm sure they'd be in pieces.

The cabinet damage is cosmetic and the boxes are sound.
I'm leaving the glue to dry on the crossover components and will put them together in the morning, so expect some pron :)

    In the meantime :guiness:

Wow. Glad to ehar the damage is only cosmetic, but it does put a damper on things. Looking forward to the pron!
Not exactly Tannoy - nothing like Tannoy, but what the hey. Here are my 12-inchers:

There are some pretty rare Tannoys on ebay at the mo', it'll be interesting to see what they go for.

Firstly a black and a silver:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....m=150275131210&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=005

and secondly a pair of blacks, which must be an incredibly rare event as blacks are like hens teeth anyway, so having two together is pretty unusual:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pair-Tannoy-1...hash=item150275134846&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1317

Worth the money they'll go for? Not for me, I had a single 12" black for a short while and I preferred the HPD's I had :D. Still, if rarity is your thing......
