What is my legal position?

AT - perhaps you're taking your avatar too literally :D ...or perhaps you didn't in the past :p

Sony portables nearly all have AVLS - it's usually a somewhat hidden sliding switch on the base or somewhere else not so obvious.

one of those little portable headphone amps? - I think PB put up a post to them once, they come in sweet tins I seem to recall.

I think it was Robert Cyrus. I think he said you even get to keep the sweets!

I thought about a portable headphone amp but how much are they? AVLS is off at the moment and the volume is too quiet, with AVLS on the output is hardly audioable.

Lol that avator was a poster for factory record's first club night in the late 70's but with my news posts I think its a time for a change.

Hmmm the old Sony portable amp problem. Basically if you use any kind of decent headphone with a modern Sony Discman - CD or MD - you don't get any kind of volume at all. I had to resort to using the supplied earbuds to be able to listen at any reasonable level (and they are crap - just about liveable with for portable use). This has been frequently reported on various portable audio forums

As you have the option my advice would be to change the unit to a Panasonic, Sharp or JVC model. They may not be as fashionable but they have more powerful amps in them.

Thanks all the feedback from this forum so far as suggested the advice Dixons gave me was a load of twoddle.

This unit cost me £65 and its just far too much of a compromise, the sound quality is rather impressive though its just a shame I can't here it on the bus

I've never had an issue with Sony portables and volume (and I've only ever had Sony portables - Discmans, Walkmans and MD players).

My portable headphones of choice are Sony EX71s which I would certainly classify as "any kind of decent headphone" :) . Never had a volume problem with them even in extremely noisy environments. They're so good at blocking off background noise I often use them on long plane trips instead of ear plugs.

Well - if you will shop in Dixons dude ;)

Seriously though, modern or not, I've never bothered with really decent headphones on portables 'cos the amps are too weedy. I use the cheapest Sony inner ears (with |"silent cap") I can get as a) they're easy to drive and b) they don't disturb anyone else.

Pannys go louder than Sonys though - for sure!

NOW - why can I get mum's PC (a P75!!) to get on the net (this is sloooooowwwwwww) but my recently-upgraded-to-XP Athlon is really crapping out on me - it refused to connect to BT Internet using the usual dial in... Have to try the proper CD on it tomorrow...

and you believe them??

Now richersounds have told me that there is no difference between Panasonic and Sony output volumes. I am going to go wth members opinions and my experience on this one and just assume you are all right (and my expereince is) and RS and dixons is wrong.

I'm going to buy a Panasonic unit tomorrow for £40 and hope that is ok. I'm very driunk now btw!

rs and dixons will say what it takes to get or keep a sale. believe your own ears and take all else with a pinch of salt.
cheers

Problem solved I bought a £40 Panasonic unit and the volume is still not great its much better than the Sony's I tried so I will keeping it. It even drives my Philips HP 890's fine.

The sound is rather ok too, not as good as HIFI but you don't feel like you are being compromised. The supplied headphones are in the bin btw:D

Dont be so surprised. The HP890's are possibly THE easiest to drive headphones on the market...

Yeah maybe but the Sony walkmans could not drive them well at least not as well as my Senheiser PX40's I use with my portables.
