Rush have had a long and varied career don't dismiss them on a casual listen, but I know you either get them or you don't, there doesn't seem to be a middle ground, not many say i like Rush a little, two camps, "That's F88kin' crap" and "Wow, i've died and gone to heaven", you and SSB are in the former camp i guess.

HeHe! Well if I find someone with a CD of theirs I may have a quick listen, but I won't be hunting for one. That said the lyrics you quoted about looked interesting, but I'm a music first person really. I feel similarly about Bob Dylan :duck:.

 

Ok, so now you've just dissed two of my all-time favourite artists, Rush and Dylan.

The most off-putting thing about that album is the clothes (and I say that in the loosest possible sense of the term) that they are wearing on the back of the album cover. What in gods name was going on in the '70's??

2112 is a fairly tidy album, they really got into their stride with Hemisphere's, Farewell to Kings and Moving Pictures. Signals was the last great album, Permenant Waves was just passible. Things went seriously downhill starting with "Hold your fire".

 

Nothing to be forgiven... I am still happy, very happy.

As I have been saying repeatedly, the majority of commerical popular music CD's seem to suffer from clipping which causes that awful harshness that vinyl lovers despise.

Whats the point of accurately reproducing distorted crap? Far better IMO to try everything you can to make it more palatable.

 

Jeez, there's a Rush forum? Now that is taking things a bit far.

Dylan sing? Nah. But it would be a sad sad world if everyone sounded like Norah Jones.

Speaking of bad vocalists, its time I listened to some Billy Bragg.

 

I have listened to Closer to the heart, Fly by night, The spirit of radio, Tom Sawyer and Working man. My assessment... they are alright! Not something I want to buy but there you go. Just to be different, I am in the 'in-between camp'. I think I enjoyed Tom Sawyer the most.

Has anybody got some instrumentals of Rush? I want to re-mix it!

However it null tests the 1062 is an excellent illustrator of diminishing returns and manages to drive my AE1s effectively. Not many amps can do that, at any price.

 

By a strange coincidence, I have a customers who wants to blow most of his budget on my speakers and make do for a while with inexpensive amplification to drive them.

The speakers are not difficult to drive but I do have a couple of requirements and I'm wondering whether the Rotel 1062 could fit the bill:

1. Is there provision for a 'preamp out' socket so that the Rotel could drive a bass filter/crossover and another power amp?

2. Does it have an 'AV bypass' ('unity gain input') as the customer has a large AV projector and would like to use the hi-fi for this purpose as well?

Finally, if the Rotel 1062 doesn't work for this application, does anyone know a good, inexpensive amplifier (probably pre/power) that would?

Steve, the RA1062 does have preamp outputs (see here (PDF file) for back panel drawing.

I don't know if it has AV bypass/Unity Gain though. The website doesn't mention it and the link on the site for the 1062 manual is broken so I can't check it.

For a similar price (slightly more) than the Rotel both the Arcam Diva A90 and FMJ A32 have pre-outs and AV bypass. They're both excellent little amps IMO.
