´Hi-Fi, Kafka and me

No, the one I meant was Ian's. Anyway, doesn't really matter.

Getting back on thread, Markus, have you fully recovered?, with replacement cards, passport etc.?

Lol I know what Nick is talking about but not why! Does Markus like Shellac or something? I played some Shellac when I went round with T and Rob to your place Dev.

I've never played Shellac on Dev's system (which is very good, btw).

I seem to remember Tenson didn't think your system did a very good job of Shellac, BBV. Although no doubt it's perfect now.

Um I dont think he said that SSB. Not perfect ... yet, give me until mid week!

Ah, I assumed when you said it would be perfect by midweek that you had a buyer for it already.

What are you going to replace it with?

I'm serious. If Murray's measurements are right, it's clearly not ideal for a quality system. I would have thought somebody who wanted the best would find this a cause for concern.

It's in the nature of a discussion forum that threads take tangents.

Have you considered something like the Tom Evans Vibe?

-- Ian

It was just one thought. I bet it measures better than your TVC.

Maybe you need to start a thread about which preamps to audition? I wouldn't have thought keeping the Django is likely to be anything other than a compromise. But if money's tight it may do in the interim, I suppose.

Actually the preamp is fine and I dont really rate the vibe - I am more concerned about the phono stage after the last bake off. Hopefully loading down with a stepup will do the trick... if not, a new phono is in order. Of course if someone brings along an active pre that shames the tvc I will reconsider.

I'm surprised you're messing around with budget preamps and phono stages, given the quality of your turntable and cost of your speakers. I think you probably need to step up a gear or two on the electronics front.

Actually the preamp is fine

Not if it measures anything like Murray's.

Well the Borbely wasnt cheap. With the stepups and case about a grand for what would cost perhaps 5 times as much at a shop. It really is very good ... except for the bass but hopefully the stepup might fix that :S

My approach to preamps is minimilist and the TVC seems to work well and is the equal of any active pre I have heard so far including the vibe. Feel free to educate me on both fronts of course.

Nick, when we next meet at your place I'll bring the phono stage and pre over again. The PSU is` now fitted with ultra fast soft recovery diodes and Black Gate caps, which also feature in the pre. I've also added a cap to the pre which reduces PSU noise even further (thanks Thorsten for the tip and schematic :) )
The Phono has now grown a new knob and led - load away to your heart's content ;)

Oh, and the pre now has remote control.
