Behringer DEQ2496

It can do both, but not very well. It only has a 64 band RTA and it doesn't set itself very accurately. Probably because it can't 'see' accurately with only 64 bands. It will give you a jist of what it can manage though if you set it to not adjust by more than 6dB and only below 150Hz. It can't do dual mono operation like this either.

Assuming you've got a good mike, can this box of tricks measure room response or automatically set itself or do you need separate software (like ETF5)?

You can "get going" using the build in algorythms and auto-adjust.

I suggest you read my review of the predeccesor of the 2496 over at enjoythemusic.com and also my article over at my groups on yahoo:

Unfortunatly you need to subscribe to Yahoo and Yahoo groups to read this, this is forced by yahoo, not me....

Where to start?

RTFM. All of it. Twice. :D

Plugging it in would be nice :)

I used to simply buy standard XLR Plugs (Male & Female he made them, Mr Cannon) at Maplin and also get standard RCA Sockets.

Place the sockets onstead of the cable outlet (might need some solid steel epoxy) and connect pin1 on the XLR with a short wire to the ring of the RCA and pin2 on the XLR to the center.

Do not use the standard adapters, they short pin 1 & 3 which sounds way worse than it has to. Then switch the level switch on the back of the EQ to 12dbu.

With that done, read my article on "Pro Audio Digital Equaliser" use here:

That bit was actually meaning my post :p but good advice, always :) My manual's a bit grubby - guy's mate spilled oil on it apparently - but that's what PDFs are for.

I'm not planning on physically modding the so I'll probably do as you say and make up some cables. I've got some good mic cable and connections kicking about.

Skimmed it last night, going to give it a good read later :)

Ok, how thick am I? I just went in an had the guy make me up a lead... Remembering what you advised.

I couldn't have got it more wrong if I'd tried!

Not only did I get male XLRs, I had him stick pin 3 to signal... I'll be nipping in tomorrow, after writing down the correct instructions, to get it fixed. :)

The pin 3 is not a disaster, it just means opposite polarity.

BTW, on the input side (if you use analog inputs) please short Pin 1 & 3, the "pin 3 unconnected" bit applies only to the output side.

Righto, got the cable fixed and flashed to 1.4.

It's not exactly night and day (compared to the analogue out on my G5), but the low end is tighter. Everything's bypassed right now.

I'll get my hands on a callibration mic as soon as I can afford it, and give the room correction a crack. Til then, it's all about the pretty lights :D

So the low end is tighter sending the signal through the DEQ even when it is not doing any room correction? :confused: You are using analogue in I take it?

G5 -optical-> DEQ -analogue-> amp
vs.
G5 -analogue-> amp

After some more time A-B'ing, I was wrong. There's absolutely nothing in it.

You can get rid of that G5 then! The £200 Behringer does just as well 'eh? Wait untill you hear what the room EQ can do!

G5 = PowerMac G5. If I got rid of that I'd have no music :p

What did you think I meant? :)
