    Hi,

You could look at the Goldring range. The 1000 series will fit the bill. The weigh 6.3 grams & have a compliance of 18. This would put it in the same region with you tonearm (between 9 to 10Hz). These start at around £80 upwards.

You could look at the Rega cartridges. These are Bias £49.00, Super Bias £69.00, Elys £99.00, Super Elys £165.00.

The Denon 103 is popular at around £100. This weighs 8.3grams and has a compliance of 5. This would put the arm/cart resonance at over 13Hz with your arm.

    Hi

What size bass drivers and what type of loading are your speakers.

I've got that on green vinyl. Proper electro rap - almost as good as the Jonzun Crew - Pack Jam!

Anyway, I get occasional cone flap as well... Only on certain records so it's likely to be warps in my case.
When I bought my phono stage I deliberately looked for one that didn't roll off steeply below 20Hz - I wanted everything on the record even if it wasn't there (if you know what I mean..). I discovered many phono stages do have what's effectively a rumble filter - my reason not to have this was so that my speakers could at least make a fist of that bottom organ (arf!) 16Hz on my recording of Arthur Willis' arrangement of Pictures at an exhibition.
If you don't know it's there you'll never miss it!!!

    dunno,sorry

mine aint warping, the big flap happens as the needle lands and then its readily apparent as the lp plays

in fact,i think its worse than ever

There is a lot of VERY low bass on DSOTM. Maybe your speakers are trying to reproduce that.

You say that fitting a new cartridge has made the problem worse. This would indicate to me that you're looking in the right area.

In other words, we're talking about a cartridge/arm resonance issue.

As a first step, try the following:
    • Loosen (or tighten) the big bolt holding the arm to the deck.
    • Attach a cardboard (or neoprine or rubber) gasket to this junction.
    • Fix a little blue-tac or plasticine to the body of the arm (re-adjusting the tracking weight afterwards).
    • Phone Origin Live - they're only a small company and might be able to help.
    • Buy a cdp

Take care, do these one at a time and see if anything makes the flapping better or worse.

PS: I think that it's very unlikely that your speakers will resonate at the frequency you're describing - whatever the bass loading .

thats what i thought at first, but it happens with most lps, just DSOTM more so.I now listen without the mesh and notice it now

cheers Steve, tbh,I have no idea whether I should worry at all,it seems other users have the same problem,i just cant seem to accept the drivers will live a long life with an hour a night worth of flapping like this

I think you should worry about it. It's not normal for this sort of thing to happen routinely.

Try Steve's suggestions. Try moving the deck. Try to borrow a different phono stage from somewhere. You need to start eliminating the possibilities one by one.

Again, if you can see the cone flapping back and forwards at what sounds from your description like a rate of a few times per second, it's very unlikely to be your speakers trying to reproduce 'low bass' - I'd be surprised if there's meant to be a lot of sub-5Hz content on DSOTM.

I used to have this problem with my Kefs. They were quite long travel drivers. It doesn't happen with the Meadowlards. I wonder if some drivers just aren't as damped as others, or if it perhaps has something to do with the grip the amplifier has over the speaker. I could easily be wrong of course, but it never concerned me that much.
Have you tried ringing someone like Walrus, or even Rega. They're very helpful if I remember right.
