Heathrow show.....

I mainly went to listen to the kuzma airline but unfortunately my attempt to engage the distributor in conversation revealed he was some sort of arrogant retard who was only interested in getting me to read reviews and didnt respond well to my comments on hifi mags.

For the first time in my life I feel sorry for Branko.

The 47 Labs TT was a prototype, btw, not a production model, and the arm is about 3 months from completion and still has a few issues. The room wasn't sounding as good as last year, but I know from experience how good this stuff is.

I liked a few other rooms, mostly it was a disappointing show.

Chris was mildly critical of a slight edge but then he listens to speakers that roll off at 14khz and deplores more modern forms of music anyway, so his comments are easy to understand when taken in context.

yes, just a slight shoutyness with some treble, but no worse than the wilson audio speakers for example. Bass was a bit lacking in quantity too.

I think to really enjoy those naim speakers, you have to listen with a ''naim head on'' - listening for what they do well (timing etc) and ignoring what they dont - like dynamics and scale.

My speakers do begin to roll off at 14khz, and die off altogether about 16khz.. but only until I add my new tweeters... at least thats the plan..

''deplores most modern music''?? naaah. I dont like much classical music, and I dont like rap at all, not keen on modern jazz. Other than that, I like most stuff. Most of all I like rock/indie/dance and thats pretty new stuff.

I remember Steve playing grandmaster flash at the show where his spkrs were playing - In my book he has kudos for that:)

I wonder how products like Zanden and Wilson would deal with a track like 'scorpio'?

Not that I want to start a fight, but the thing I didn't like about the Naim room was it was very bright and on top of that it was harsh and slightly confused.

I'm a PMC man but I didn't like what I heard at the show very much. I think they had some crap electronic music on the two times I went in. It didn't sound harsh from standing at the back of where the chairs were though. Just lacking a bit of body, and shite music.

3d - agree about the avantgardes - good but a bit shouty. I have never heard wilsons can you believe it? I dont know about that 47 labs turntable - something about the treble felt like it could be attributed to the deck or the arm.

I am afraid I agree with Wm - it did only one texture to my ears ... sandpaper. Where were the merlin speakers? The pmc ob1s sounded laid back to me when I heard them. I have sentient ears - 20% more effective than normal ears and I can listen to two sources at the same time through specially constructed headphones. Stereophile... experts... haha I like it.

Dont feel sorry for branko he was an ass. He is renowned for it apparently.

I think an awful depends on the music playing. If you like the music, it can persuade you. Don't have enough expirience to say what was good but nothing there blew me away. In the Zanden room someone asked for His CD to be played and wow! Spanish Harlem by Rebecca Pidgeon on the chesky label. then Something by James Taylor which i also liked. I went on Friday and was quite uncomfortable/intimidated as everyone seemed to be much more knowledgeable but i suspect this could be down to the paranoia :(

Exactly - bad music bad sound. If they were playing some electronic nonsense to show off it prob sounded awful. It sounded fine when I was there. I am beginning to doubt your perspicacity wadia! After shaming yourself with comments about the BL now this...

:spank:

5) Big format Coaxials like Tannoy, Urei/Altec etc in their various guises (be it Tannoy System 215, Tannoy Dreadnaught, Urei 803/813/823 or Aletc 604's in a soffit mounted 620 Cab with Mastering labs X-Over), these are mostly excellent, macro & microdynamics, image size, lack of mechanical artifacts, sadly the coherence could be better, but they are my other favourite commercially available systems, Tannoy probably ahead of Urei/Altec, make mine a pair of GRF Autograph with Monitor Red Drivers I think or a pair of original Dreadnaughts.
You can't be all that bad then :D.

Anyway, in case you're interested, Walrus are having a couple of "Tannoy Prestige" evenings. The demo includes Westminster Royals (15"DC). Details here. Perhaps I should put this on a new thread.

And all of the above drivel just goes to show how very difficult it is for manufacturers and reviewers alike. Sound is such a personal thing, given how far it is from reality. Of course age has to be taken into account.

I suspect Alex hit the nail on the head. Some of us were listening to the music whilst others were dissecting the sound in audiophile terms. Sad.

.. or perhaps its because you're a frog that lives in a condom.

I agree that music being played can a have such a big influence on the sound that a lot of demostrators choose jazz lite or their own demo discs. A system than can sound insightful on a well recorded disc can sound overly bright and abrasive on a badly recorded one (and lets face it, thats the majority of recordings made today)
