Julian's Speaker Build Diary....

i'm reserving judgement until they have been running for a week but initial impressions are favourable. if i had to criticise i'd say that the bass was a bit loose but i believe that this can be fixed with some long hair wool behind the mid and bass drivers - if it isn;t just a break in issue.
i've not had a huge opportunity to listen critically but there's nothing offensive which is always a good place to start.
cheers

hopefully it will inspire a few others to have a go themselves.

Certainly got me thinking. And I'm sure I'm not alone....

Hi julian ...

Must have missed something .....why the textured foam. Most Transmission line designs go for smooth tubes like organ pipes. Allowing a clean wave front to exit the Mouth[?] The stuffing is then used to extend the length of the pipe[ ie the sound thinks its got to travel further] this then tunes the bottom frequency. Oh yes the bottom end rolls off from quite a high point but the curve is gentle so that may be some of what your hearing
.

If anyone wants advice on veneering and supply let me know, I've done a fair bit now.

pete,
i just bought the kit and followed the plans. i always thought the idea of a transmission line was to present the cone with an ideal cross between horn and reflex port with some sort of 1/4 wave voodoo thrown in for good measure.
other than that i've no idea....
cheers

julian.

Being a newbie, I just foud this. Excellent job i must say. Is there a revirew anywhere or pictures of the finnished item?

i still have them but they are in storage at present along with my vincent amps - once i get myself a big enough room again they'll be straight out and rocking again. i'd only get rid of them if i won the lottery and could afford some original nautilli along with some monster amps to drive them - even then they'd probably stay and end up in the bedroom system or something. unlikely then...
still finished in raw mdf - not the best looking beasts but sound great...

i had them in a 14ft by 24ft room and it was just about big enough - to be honest this will be one of the main criteria when i go house hunting again.

Julian,

I have been reading this thread from time to time for the last few months, and I must say I am impressed. Thank you for even keeping it alive.

I am about to order a kit, but would like to see your opinion of whether you would today buy the Dome kit (S5TL Dome http://www.iplacoustics.co.uk/S5tl Dome.htm) or the Kevlar Ribbon type (http://www.iplacoustics.co.uk/S5 Kevlar Ribbon.htm) for some 90 quid extra? It does not go quite as far down in the bass as the Dome, but it is supposed to more accurate. I just wonder, as all I have read about the Dome type, whether it is worth it. Also I have to consider that the prices more than double with shipping customs dues and local VAT.

PS: hope you get a volumous flat soon! ;-)

I spoke to Ivan about this (IPL). He generally reccomends the ribbon version if your room is slightly smaller. If your room is under about 16 feet, you may want to prefer this.

I remember seeing this a year ago or so, but then the spec of the Kevlar was only down to 28Hz, whereas it is now 23Hz, so the diff between Kevlar and Dome is only 1Hz if I am not mistaken. Which is why I am poking around for answers. ;)
