Julian's Speaker Build Diary....

When they're finished, are you going to be able to see that, ahem, fairly DIY looking foam stuff in the transmission line "port" (or whatever it's called) at the bottom?

By "DIY looking" I'm not commenting on your workmanship, but having that foam visible just would look a bit odd IMO. Great work though, keep it up :)

Michael.

michael,
the foam in the port is definately diy looking - i think i had to use about 5 different pieces to get everything to fit so DIY looking is being kind.
there is a speaker grille that will cover the whole front of the speaker. i'm not sure whether to do this as ivan says in the instructions or whether to cut the grille in 'half' so i can have the port covered and the drivers exposed if i want to.
it's these little modifications that make things interesting.
cheers

These are looking great... Really good for a first DIY Speaker project. Reading through this i'm sure will inspire a few more people to give it a go... I'm certainly very interested now .. Superb job.

You can always cut away the foam near the TL mouth, so that it's not visible. It is going to make bugger all difference in those positions as there is no cavity for there to be any resonances for the foam to damp at that point in the line.

Yep! Got me thinking for sure!

Keep it up Julian :D

Fire 2....

well it'd be cool if some people reading this did actually have a bash themselves. if i can do it (with help from WM on the x/overs) then i would think anyone can. if you do have a think about one of ivan's kits they are really well made although i can't comment on how they sound yet :D but i've heard good things about them from most who've built some.
i've started on the 2nd speaker cabinet now - just got the box glued together and it's upstairs drying with weights on top of it. i won;t post any pictures as it looks almost exactly the same as the first one did - except without as much sweat.
everything is lined up pretty well. i'll put the tl and deflectors in tomorrow and then leave it to dry until sunday before bracing it. hopefully should have the whole thing lagged and ready for drilling on wednesday. tone's promised to get me the x/o's finished next week so if i'm lucky i may be running them in next weekend... well we'll see.
cheers

Grills

Julian, the grills are one thing you can do whuile waiting for the PAF to come, but the cabinets have to be complete to do them, (see Ivans instrauctions). One thing about having a full length grill is thta there is hopefully a little less interesting for a7 yearr old!

Or better yet, cage the kid! :JOEL:

mo.
unfortunately the namby pamby nanny state casts a dim view on that sort of thing. as i'm a single dad as well they'd have me in some sort of 'programme' and my kid in foster care quicker than you can say abuse. although if i closed off the under stair bit bought an owl and mentioned harry potter she might go for that....

i haven't posted for a few days as i've been rather busy in the real world. i've now finished gluing things together and am waiting for the boxes to dry before bracing and lining the 2nd speaker. i'll probably get to that on monday or tuesday evening.
cheers

Hi,
finally got round to bracing the panels on the 2nd speaker. those bits of wood are a bugger to cut the right length given my rudimentary skills and tools. but i got there in the end,
tony has sent me some pics of his handiwork with the corossovers. hopefully i'll get them on saturday so i should be running them in next week :yikes:

anyway piccy time....

once again massive thanks to tony for doing the crossovers for me. i doubt i'd have even attempted the project without his offer of that.

I see there are 2 air-core inductors in the xover. That definitely means dont put it in a magnetisable box [eg steel] as it could alter the values, add distortion and exert a field near TV screens etc.

the x-overs are going in the speaker cabs as ivan intended for now. at a later point i'll be overhauling with better components and some omiga wire. at that point they'll go offboard - probably in a nice wooden box - maybe i'll see if ivan can sell me another pair of stands for the purpose.
cheers
