nos dac problem?

Folks,

hearing all this Non-OS DAC talk. In a cold winter, it warmed the cockles of my heart (could not resist). And to remember how they jeered and claimed it could never worked when I forst posted about that stuff in the late 90's.

Have fun, but do yourselves a favour. Try TDA1541 or PCM56 Non-OS and MAKE SURE to use a really LINEAR analogue stage. For good reasons, both....

Ciao T

Just came across this

In case anyone's interested here's a pic of my own PSU for my Derek Shek NOS DAC:

The regulator circuit and toroidal came from LC Audio for a paltry 53€ (about £30), the connectors and sockets etc from RS and the slightly naff plastic case from a local electronics store. Does the job though :)

Michael.

hi all

have you used that psu with the dac from new, michael?

the reason i ask is that i still have problems with my dac and think maybe it's
the supplied psu?
i have found a track that the problem is easily identified on (track 9 of the free naim cd with hfc last year)just listen to the vibraphone and you'll hear
"crackling distortion".
i have emailed derek shek for advice but did not get a reply.

could someone with a nos dac please try the above track and let me know if
it happens?

kane

cheers isaac
think i'll go back to a one box cdplayer :(
anyone know what a good match for a rotel 1062 would be....

kane

kane - to start with I used the wall-wart PSU that Derek Shek supplied and I only built my own one later. I'd say that it's extremely unlikely that the PSU would be causing the problems you're experiencing. FWIW I've listened to that track from the Naim CD through my NOS DAC and it sounds fine :)

Michael.

thanks for trying that michael

anyone know what would need fixing and how much it would cost?

or should i get rid and upgrade my cd player?

kane

Kane,

Wasn't this thoroughly dissected a week or two ago? IIRC Mr 3D Sonics gave a thorough outline of how to diagnose and adjust the NOS DAC. Perhaps worth trying to contact Derek Shek again also.

Stuart.

bugger, nos was sent back east on 19.03.05, derek still has not rec'd it...........
should have got him to send me his address in the local lingo - i bet its sat on a shelf in his local post office cos no-one can read the address in english!
fair play to the guy though, i have experienced very good communication with him so far, he's asured me it will be fixed and returned and he wont even let me order the his PSU (would make sense for them both to come to me in the same box!) until i have the dac back and confirm i'm happy with it.........
will keep you posted

You'd have thought English would be widely spoken in Hong Kong, its not that long ago they left the mighty empire! Im sure it'll turn up. Actually I wonder what would happen if he had wrote our addresses in the native tongue??

been in contact with derek shek, and he offered to fix the unit even though
i bought the dac s/hand........ :respect: i kindly declined the offer.

all i need is a 1.5k rmg resistor to replace the 1.8k one....
where can i get one from and is it easy enough to do myself?

There's probably an independent electronics shop in your area that'll do it for a small fee.

brown/grey/red/brown is not the correct colour code for 1K5. Should be brown/green/black/brown

The one you said is 1.82K
