Ah now makes sense - I didnt spot you'd ended up getting the ones from SoM. The dude there is baffled why he has suddenly received so many calls about them - f**king bargain dude! Well done.

greg, thats the ones i got stuufed on.

Oh, I thought it the original pair were via exdem.co.uk? This thread has become so all encompassing I am losing the plot - I cant tell Mana threads from football threads from subs from Medowlarks burble burble burble...

LoL

OK
exdemo is a site that lists dealers with second hand/ex demo gear, they dont sell anything.
I was buying from SOM, but his work partner had already sold them a few hours before.
I was lucky to find another pair, brand new, from Hifiguy in Brighton.

Lord Summit,

Ive demo'd the Harlechs before.
The reviews at the time in the mags made them sound like the best thing since sliced bread!

IMHO a pair of Ruark Talismans I A/B'd them with took them apart and made them sound silly.

but!! it depends on the sound you like.

I would describe the Harlech sound as wide open and spacious from its top mounted driver, but lacking impact speed and drive sort of open and warm and unfocused.

I would try them if you are considering them, they may leave you as cold as they did me, or you may love them like the hifi journalists at the time.

Funnily, the shop I tried them in was equally divided. Half the staff loved them, the others thought like me.

Chris

No if I buy something on a whim it would be really stupid. I loved the Meadowlarks and think they would really move on my system, so buying something else would be pointless unless it was really good. I want something with real pace and bass. Must be good with classical and rock, and be a good match for the Naims. It's not easy to think of contenders, especially when they can't be huge as the room is big but with a fairly low ceiling and beams. I might just carry on looking for a pair of the Meadowlarks, you never know lightening might strike twice....

The Meadowlarks use the same woofer as my Sonus Fabers + a similar tweeter, same order xover, also time aligned box, so they cannot be that bad... :MILD:

Go on then anybody got any other suggestions for speakers with a similair presentation, They can't cost more than £500. Is it the transmission line that makes them so special?

Mmmm, a Peerless tweeter, vifa midrange, floorstanding and transmission line loading Antonio.

Still I guess they use a box :D

You should learn before you write, what you say of the drivers is BS... :p

By big Saab, I mean realistic weight and scale. But yes it's important to get this without overhang and bloat. When done properly the midrange benefits greatly with the perception of greater texture and tangability. It is amazing how many hifi's fail here. It is fair to say I listen to a lot of Dub & Reggae so for me it's essential. But even Eva Cassidy benefits.

well I guess I must be a flat chap, bass just isn't essential at all for me (bass as a concept by itself that is)

Never heard the Meadowlarks, but the Quad 21L should go similarly deep in the bass and does sound fantastic (I found it extremely natural-sounding with orchestral music) - you should be able to get a second hand / ex display pair under £500.

Saab,

if your not into bass my I suggest a pair of Kans :)
Weather flat or round bass is an issue, though usually one of timing and intregrative (is there such a word as that, well bollox we'll use it anyway :D ) coherence, earthy bass tends to be leaner and faster, drier too, where the roundie sort is big and full, and usualy not as intergrated.

Pete,
not heard the Meadowlarks? prehaps we should remedy that :)

so I'm a flat listener then:) I'm not saying it isn't an issue, not at all,but I clearly prefer coherenet, earthy bass too big and full.I'm not a tune demer either,I am not that geeky,(and I haven't a frigging clue what it means anyway),but I do try to avoid getting embroiled in "how big is your wil..er,bass" sort of conversations.Take a guy at work today, proudly told me he has a new system "can rattle windows" he proudly proclaimed

oh

ps I don't actually know whether I have coherent,earthy,dry bass.I will look a twat if I haven't

I've heard the Quads a little 'unexciting' maybe. They don't do tuneful bass like the Meadowlarks either. Hopefully another set might come up.
What are TDL like, they've got transmission lines haven't they

The HR Shearwater's cabinet is impressive both inside and outside. Meadowlark's master cabinetmaker, Robert Lane, deserves recognition for some truly beautiful work. I had review samples in rosewood and cherry finishes, and both were very lovely. The drivers utilized in this design are equally impressive. The HR Shearwaters use a very expensive 7" carbon-fiber woofer from ScanSpeak and 1" silk-dome tweeter from the same Danish manufacturer.

OK cheers Antonio, so the ideal alternative to the Meadowlarks is the Sonus Fabers. Don't think they'll either fit in my room or in my budget. I more had in mind floorstanders I wouldn't need to buy a non-integrating sub for :p
