The room is controlled, it sounds great. :D

The D100s work extremely well nearfield in Merlin's average-sized room that you would think, at first glance, would be overwhelmed by them (sonically at least, visually there's no getting away from them). Very very good speakers indeed (as they should be for the money). I haven't heard Merlin's monster JBL setup for comparison, but as it stands what he has now is an order of magnitude closer to the experience of live music than I've heard from most setups. Very impressive indeed.

    Ian,

In Essence then, I might have half a chance, not to get reduced to rumble if I use the bigger Meadowelarks .
Though the last time I had some in there they just seriously excited the room, though the odd change has been made since.
May yet be worth a try :)

Well worth a try. If it doesn't work just buy a pair of D100s, job done. :)

For a big speaker, they have a surprising delicacy and openness (that'll be the ATC midrange driver). Much less fat sounding than other Proacs I've heard, very well balanced throughout the frequency range.

I suspect the big speaker/small room conundrum is always solveable, provided the big speaker is voiced appropriately. I also suspect there's no cheap solution, more's the pity - really good big speakers are really expensive, it seems, unless you start looking at the vintage market, or are prepared to muck about with new-fangled EQ devices.

'snot just his subs that are shit, it's his AV setup, poor delusioned old codger thinks he can hang on to his "yoof" by getting to grips with this new fangled technology.

He'll be buying a flat next and filling it with speakers, to fit in with his idea of modern bijou living just like the young city types. (or just to copy merlin)

    :)

Very true, except that really good large vintage loudspeakers and the new-fangled EQ devices are not cheap either.

Not if we're talking Siemens Eurodyns or JBL Paragons :)

Are they really 14K... Bloody hell, as Ian says, they'd better be good.
Does anyone know how much Tannoy Westminsters are in the UK?

I suppose it's his best chance of getting a firm bottom.
Have you ever seen a Harley rider with their knee on the floor?
