Sony SCD-1 mods

There's no doubt that the better Sony machines dont register on the radar for most audiophools. Thats not to suggest (or not suggest) they are the best machines available, but many folks would never want their sys fronted by a Sony, regardless of the quality of playback.

You are so to the point, I have friends who own very high end systems and they would turn their nose up to anything else bar ML, krell etc alike. I think they are more into the hardware than actually enjoying the music. One example I can tell you, a friend changes his system nearly every month and states that I have found the perfect sound and will never upgrade or change his system, but weeks later, the whole system is changed and the same phrase is said again. This goes on and on and to be very honest, I dont think he really sits down and listen properly before jumping the gun and digging deep into his pocket again.
I will keep you updated once the mods are done.
Final note, do you notice that the SCD1 are abit fussy on disc. I can play certain disc that sounds great from a different front end and sound dull with the scd1, but when you find a top notch disc played in the scd1, boy, does it sound good.
cheers

I'm not sure the SCD-1 was developed simply to sell to the Japanese market -
You could be correct, but I think you may well be wrong. Still easy enough to check if anyone is interested. FWIW, Japan is a hugely significant market in the audio world (and beyond), and is worth the effort of developing for. You will all be happy to know that Sony recently launched a $10K digital amp and matching SACD player for... the home market. And Yamaha have launched a $6K digital amp and a $3K passive pre amp.
Please keep in mind that more often than not, change is nothing more than change.

I think if I was going to spend serious amounts of dosh on digital, one of the Japanese high end offerings would be the only option worth considering. These are the companies that do most of the R&D in this area, after all. Meridian aside, and perhaps Linn, I can't think of many smaller hifi companies who do much more than build their CD players out of OEM parts. It's tweaking rather than innovative design. (Not their fault, digital R&D is an expensive business.) And I have no doubt a lot of the price is accounted for by over the top casework and fancy pants design (which mostly looks pug ugly anyway), rather than sonics.

Incoming!

I have no doubt at all that the Nippon market is of enormous significance regards hardware and software. It is evident in the number of high-tech products which never see the light of day elsewhere. I am not questioning that. I'm saying the creation of the SCD-1 coincided with Sony (along with Phillips) "selling" SACD format - or rather was developed to be launched with the format. I expect you would agree the format itself wasnt developed more for the Japanese market than for the rest of the world? If so, and if you agree the SCD-1 was likely developed to champion the format, then you would probably agree it was not developed specifically for the Japanese market.

Also bear in mind there is a time and a place for Koans.

Congratulations on using the only word in the English language "plug-ugly" that contains the string 'ug-ug', as fans of Thurber's game Superghosts will know :)

abc
ach-ach
ndk

anyone?

Do I get a prize? :D

ach-ach must be stomach-ache, I'll have to think about the other 2.

Edit: "plug ugly" is an Americanism I think. I prefer "pug ugly" myself (and pugs are certainly ugly beasts)

Joel,

if that's the piano black thingy I recently had a chance to play with it over here. Very disappointing sadly - the £800 Tact really did blow it's doors off. I believe yamaha are thinking of selling in the UK at £3K

Will have to think about abc and ndk. What about "ghtsbr", I'm pretty sure the only occurance of 6 consecutive consonants in English (it's pretty easy)...and they say Czech is hard to pronounce :D

doesn't Plug-ugly refer to a certain Beano character?

The OED cites written examples from the US dating back to 1856, so apparently not. They have:

slang (orig. and chiefly US) A city ruffian or rowdy. More widely, a man of violence, one who adopts intimidatory methods. Also attrib. and as adjective.

The 1856 quote comes from a newspaper, the Butte Recorder: "The Plug Uglies went to Philadelphia on election day to fight off and whip the democracy from the polls."

The OED's great. :D

Antonio, you know I would never lower myself to buying anything from Krell. I have more taste than that ;)

I know, Krell is only about good sound, you prefer other kind of gear that gets more attention, particularly lots of bells and whistles, like TACT and McIntosh, or the biggest in town like JBL and D100... ;)
