Not really but kept his imagination alive, allowing him to right great lyrics.

It's a bit like Santana and Sri Chinmoy, having these Guru's allowed these people to be extremely creative, and obviously slightly bonkers, remember there is a fine line between genius and insanity.

If Ayn Rand was his guru, he was obviously taking the wrong drugs :p

You'll have to ask him that one, I am not a fan of her writings, for the record.

Not really, not for the most part. Vassari cultivated the idea of tortured genius in his "Lives of the Painters". DaVinci, for one, liked to cultivate the idea that he was beyond and disinterested in the merely material (incapable, perhaps). In reality, he was a maniacal book keeper.

Actually I've just thought, you are all wrong about the greatest drummer, it is Stewart Copland because he can play standing up! AK I agree that Peart is a great drummer and I know what you are saying about Geddy's voice. I think that Steve Gadd has it on feel though.

I think you'll find you're still all wrong..
    The best drummers are:
Grant Calvin Weston (check him out on anything from free jazz to funk to hard rock.. Liquid!)
Dennis Chambers - you can't argue with P-Funk...

A second for Dennis Chambers. A rock style drummer playing funk. Didn't Art Blakey used to stand up doing his snare rolls??

Having watched a lot of the drummers you guys reccomend I would still say Mr Peart is about as good as it gets, pity there wern't some videos on the drummers world, he's the only one I know who doesn't sound boring to non enthusiasts, the man plays with effortless prescision, watching some of these other guys struggle with there rolls and fills, (in comparison to Peart and Chambers) they all look like they are trying too hard, I urge anyone who is interested in drummers, but not Rush, to buy/borrow the "Live in Rio" DVD, on the second disc, he does his customary drum solo, and it is in multiview, mesmerising, even my Missus who likes Rush even less than shew likes drummers, sat agog through the whole thing.

Peart has still to be bettered IMO.

Kinda looks a bit like NP no wonder other drummers need four arms to keep up with him. :)

oops nearly forgot about nick mason, he's pretty handy too, PC ain't that bad, but hes good as opposed to exceptional, CT is way better, nearly forgot about Graham Lear too, pretty rythmical, for those that like such things.

PC used to be quite competent in Brand X. But while we're about it how about Pip Pyle & Pierre Moerlen of Gong?
