What are these things, electric razors? ;)

No, seriously, I like them, the main reason being the lack of wood veneer. I'm sick and tired of wood veneer. Speaker manufacturers (most of them anyway) completely lack imagination when it comes to finish. Its either wood veneer or black ash or piano laque.

I find this a very interesting attempt. But I agree with the above comment, you want to be careful this kind of design may outdate fast.

    Cheers

A wise man once said that there's no point arguing over questions of taste (or something like that). Still, I'm curious, can you give an example of a speaker that does really appeal to you?

    design chestnuts

Afternoon Steve, the two that come to mind are:

    Form follows function

    Truth to materials

There really are some visually interesting things (to me) about the Nonsuch:

the drivers themselves - they look like what they are and you can see why they are that way

the insides - complex but purposeful

The new designs all look like styling exercises, which to be fair is what they are, but none look like they would have any real 'presence'. Several people have commented that they look like they would fall over; something I'm sure you would fix; but looking like they will fall over, even if they won't, is not pleasing.

My preference would be something rather more minimal; that presented the drivers for what they are rather than blending them into the whole; that had a solid presence and visual purpose; that looked like it was staying put. Think monoliths from 2001....

And, can't remember, but were wall mounts a possibility?

Thanks for your comments Coda II. I'm grateful for the comments that many ZGers have made and the thought and time given.

Wall mounts are a possibility but I feel would be the more difficult marketing option - read practically impossible for a company like mine, at this stage. The wall mount range will be released after the revised Nonsuch range.

Yes, form does follow function (and will continue to do so) but I hope form can be embellished to result in a more attractive package. I think I can promise that the new speaker will sound better than the old. The drive units are improved and so is the enclosure design - I'm not talking just about the appearance but about the basics which would apply to whichever design is chosen.

Before I listen to music through a new cabinet/material I take an enclosure without drive units or padding/damping and speak into the drive unit holes. These listening tests have demonstrated clearly that the new enclosure material is better than the MDF I've been using. Had I stayed with the existing design I would have moved to Baltic Birch Ply but I even prefer the new stuff to that. Of course I've only listened to a single driver mock-up but the internal cabinet shape was identical and the front panel shape similar.

I do hope that whatever 'styling exercise' ends up being applied to my designs enhances the overall package - also that they not only are stable but look stable too. Incidentally, the current Nonsuch 4 is nothing like as stable as it should be when pushed from the front - and I have the scars to prove it.

I do wonder, what the results of the poll would have been if I had included the current Nonsuch 4 shape to the choices given.

Thanks for the offer. I will certainly arrange a ZG listening day(s) as soon as I have the new speakers ready (glutton for punishment that I am).

I struggled a while before I could remember what they reminded me of. It's the KEF KHT 9000 on the tall stand.

    In good time. ;)

PS: I wish that we weren't doing so bl**dy badly. Then I could gloat about your lot losing 3-0. Sigh.

The reason that I've changed the link and taken those designs off-line is that we've moved to the next phase. The design chosen was not one of the concept drawings shown here but has been developed from those concepts and has been influenced by people's opinions of them (including ZG members, of course).

Thanks for your help - very valuable.

PS: I don't like the design of the Vivids at all, by the way.
