He he - someone beat me to it - but I was going to say your Audio Research isn't exactly pretty :) Looks are irrelevant though - it's how it sounds that matters...

TonyL - got you beat dude - I have *3* lava lamps - all in my bedroom at the moment. When I get this spare rack off a colleague, the 8track will be joining them :)

I'm still on the hunt for some bloody big IMFs - the TLS80s would be nice. Bet the NAIT would blow if I tried running them off it though ;)

I have but two lava lamps so concede defeat!

I heard TLS80s decades ago driven by a Quad 303, which implies the Nait would have no real problem (the 14 watt Nait 1 apparently generates more transient current than the 100 watt Quad 405!). The Nait / TSL80 may not be an ideal match logically from a system building perspective, but they would definitely work. A lot of the huge 70s speakers are pretty easy to drive as they are relatively efficient and have quite easy loading – remember the average amp of the time was only 20-45 watts.

I should have it by Friday at the latest - so i should be fulfilling my anorak duties this weekend :D

It weighs just over 35Kg packed, which apparently is more than the courier was prepared to take on their 'normal' service - were the threshold was 32Kg.

So it is being sent by freight. What does that mean exactly? That it is going to turn up in a big truck as opposed to a van - or that it is going to be airlifted in - or just simply they are charging more for the same priviledge?

Anyway, carriage costs were reasonable, with hefty insurance included.

    cheers

Hey - that's true - I might well have to start hunting for a pair then - wall huggers at their most extreme!

And those old amps' blue backlight fasias are lavish - why aren't more products these days made to look "different" and sumptuous like that?

A bit late in joining in, but another big thumbs up from here for brushed metal facias a la a lot of 70's/80's home entertainment kit. Back lit analgoue displays (VU's, magic eyes and tuning scales) are another fave of mine, you just don't get those nice touches with modern kit! :MILD:

Have to say though, although I don't mind wooden side-cheeks, all wood surrounds I definitely don't do, far too olde-worlde for me. Whereas the silver and gold with grey/black/silver/gold covers look a lot more hi-tech - almost ageless dare I say. :D

The condition is even better than i imagined, it really is A1; It honestly looks brand new. :MILD:

Can't plug it in 'till tonight. Just hope it works as good as it looks..... :pRaT:

I'll pass the day reading the tome that is the manual. Lord, the schematic when opened up would fill a wall. Just looks like a load of criss cross lines to me

Agree with yoiu there! It would do for a bedroom/bathroom/garage/kitchen/shed/conservatory rig, I suppose.

Don't forget to add some cheaply made speakers for effect :D

The Pioneer looks fantastic; both outside and inside.
Built during the golden era when engineers decided what to make. Before Jap economy got into difficulties and the cost cutters moved in.

So, what does it sound like?
How does it compare with your modern kit?
