Thanks for the offer, bit worried about speaker sensitivity with that amp, the site say speakers above 88db, mine are 86.....

Bombed out on trying to audition a rotel, no where in Bristol stocks the 1070 or 1080.

    Ok
i managed to find some spec on the contours -

    Impedance, Nominal: 4 ohms
    Impedance, (20-200 Hz): 3.6 - 11.5 ohms
    Impedance, (200-20 kHz): 3.6 - 9.1 ohms
    Impedance, Phase Shift (20-200 Hz): -36.9º - +33.1º
    Impedance, Phase Shift (200-20 kHz): -7.1º - +22.4º
Impedance, HF (200 kHz): 7.0 ohms

erm, i think that means they have a fairly flat impedence curve, and if so they may not be to bad a load.
    Can anyone confirm this?

    Decision made
I will phone WAD tomorrow and try to arrange a demo. Persuaded a mate to take me to Newport Pagnell if i buy the breakfast on route;)

Ill demo the KAT6550 and possibly the 300B SE and the PP version.
If it is shown that the Dyns are not compatable i need to re-assess. Probably more cash needed in that case and further research..

This doesn't quite add up. With the impedance minima shown, I would have thought that they would have a rated nominal of more than 4 ohms overall. Either that or they are just very conservatively rated, or they spend much more time in the ~4 ohm impedance area than the cursory look at the ratings suggest.

    Cheers

I'm not an expert but isn't it the case that valve amps prefer 8 ohm speakers

Well I'm not really an expert either. The Dynaudios look pretty benign for a 4 ohm load. Valve amps almost certianly would prefer 8 ohm speakers, but as 4 ohm go, there isn't anything nasty in the specs that I can see.

    Cheers

Dynaudios like lots of clean power. They also like a very firm hand in the bass, as the bass reflex alignment is more about extension and power than about tightness, if you see what I mean.

If you want to power them from a valve amp, it can be done, but it gets very expensive.

    and

No to both of these. They prefer whatever output transformer is wired for. Some have 4, 8 and 16 ohm taps. Use whatever is appropriate.

Dont worry about it mate. Its wise to be cautious.
With partridge transformers and a 4ohm tap they would eat them up for tea, but dont worry it's on E-bay and the bidding is going well :)

I'd take your speakers with you if you can...
the single ended monoblocks sound the best to me, its worth a try to see if they drive them to your liking.

    Funny that...

The guy setting up www.hificollective.co.uk is also called Nick.

It looks like they will be doing kit amps aswell.

Even more of a coincidence, they are both based in Newport Pagnell!

Also by sheer coincidence, I think the W.A.D. operation is going to be run by someone else in the future...Noel K perchance?

Thats all rumour of course, nothing in it you understand :D

    Hi Penance.

    yea
    tried a couple
kat6550 - nice tone and fast but low end was way off
kat34 - more mellow sounding but just couldnt wake up the Dyn's.
Nick was a decent chap, he admitted that it just wasnt going to happen and we didnt bother with the 300B amps as they are lower powered again.
At least i know for sure now.
    Back to the hunt......
