Songs In The Key Of Life - Stevie The Tumbleweed Connection - Elton John
What's this like? I've only got some of his cheesy early 90s, the best of, and "Goodbye yellow brick road" (fantastic album!). I'm playing: "Get behind me satan" - White Stripes "Bleed like me" - Garbage "Loveless" - My bloody valentine "Chelsea girl" - Nico (a bday pressie from Ilockyer - it's really good )
what's the new Garbage one like ? - loved the first two, thought the third was poor and repetitive (and copy protected, which hacks me off and means I can't get to know it better on my iriver...)
David Holmes Presents The Free Association Marley and the Wailers - Kaya Kristin Hersh - Hips and Makers
Yeah its not bad. Never heard any of the songs before...which is refreshing for Elton stuff as his hits get played over and over on local radio. I've got it on vinyl for a couple of quid and the sleeve is lovely. Really nicely done with all the lyrics in a book in the middle with some nice pics. One of the nicest albums I own in that respect. Dunno if I'd be that bothered about it on CD but if you like his stuff then its worth having.
INXS - Kick Stevie Nicks - Rock a Little Stevie Nicks - Timespace: The Best of OST - Miami Vice OST - Miami Vice II
Quiet day at work today, so I've got the iPod on. Currently in the mood for some Mike and the Mechanics albums. Listening to: Hits The Living Years M6 I've also got their new album released with Paul Carrick last year. Not as keen on that one - it has more of an R and B sound to it and none of the 'Rutherford' guitar sound.
Monolake's new album 'Polygon Cities' AFX Analord collection (1-11) Frank Zappa (especially 'Joe's Garage') Stevie Ray Vaughan Mississippi Fred McDowell, awesome slide guitar Delta bluesman Nile's new album 'Annihilation of the Wicked' :slayer:
ooooooohhh!!! I wasn't aware there was a box set. How much? Link? Amazon only seems to have the individual 12"s
There has been a mixed reception to the Analord series, some people were calling Aphex a sell out for the £40 mail order only folder, some calling the whole thing a gimmick. Part 10, which originally only came with the folder (and I was lucky enough to get hold of) is being released next week as a picture disc at a standard price (about £6). Check out www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=17966 (you can listen to good quality samples of the series here too). Cheapest place to buy is www.warp.com where they are all £4.49 each. As for me, I think it's awesome. I am a very devoted Aphex follower, but still I think it's refreshing to see him getting back to analogue (acid!) electronics after the whole laptop/IDM movement of the last few years. The music has got a more 'hands on' feel to it, with some of the best basslines I've heard from Aphex. Some people are calling it his best work yet. It's a very varied collection too, as is all of Aphex's work. And they are all 180g pressings.
As I stated in my last post, the folder was a mail order only item direct from Aphex's label Rephlex for £40, and it came with 12 inserts (all embossed with the Aphex logo) and No. 10 of the series, which to many people's relief is now being released individually. It was limited to 1000 copies and is not going to be re-issued (apparently). Only place you'll find it now is, of course, ebay, where it has been going for £150-200. Here's the folder:
Cool, will have to pick some up then. I noticed it was getting alot of record of the weeks lately at piccadilly but not had much cash so haven't been able to buy any. Do you prefer the earlier stuff then? I reckon druqks is probably my fav so far, insanely complex.
'Selected Ambient Works Vol. II' is still my favourite album ever, which is largely based upon analogue sounds (I think) - it absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it and opened me up to a world of music which I may otherwise have missed. Having said that I love all of his stuff, 'Drukqs' especially, which is an amazing album in every respect (I managed to get hold of the ltd. vinyl of that too). I think Aphex has been referred to as a modern Mozart, and I wouldn't disagree - his music is complex, sublime, tender, aggressive, heartfelt and so much more besides, and he can't even read music! And he's prolific too, apparently he has released less than 1% of all the music he has ever made. If you like the complex stuff then try getting hold of Venetian Snares, from Canada (that's him on the left there!) - he has taken complexity to new limits. He has been likened to the most intense Aphex/Squarepusher material, but has that essential subtlety too. Probably a good start would be the album 'Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding'.
Yes I have a few venetian snares bits, pretty mental. Theres a good Boom Bip remix I've got on a B-side. Didn't realise that was him in your pic tho, every day is a school day .Also have the druqks vinyl, lovely, 4 disks. Have the CD too which sounds awful in comparison
Currently I got on the collection i picked up from the wychwood festival which consists of Alabama 3 - Outlaw Show of hands - As You Were (The live CD of the Autumn tour 2004) Steve Earle - The Hard Way mory kanté - Akwaba Beach (personaly think it sounds a little electronic for its style) All of these groups i saw live with Alabama 3 and Mory Kanté being the best live.
