The next amp down form that is the RB1080 and after that the 1070.

It was on the basis of hearing the 1080 that I decided to buy the 1090. The 1080 is about £800+ brand new.

Yeah I just found a picture of it...

Is that a real heatsink on the front? Are the transistors front mounted???????? Surely not? Or are they to dissipate case heat and look nice?

The front heatsinks are purely cosmetic; there are others which run down the sides but under the casing.

The front ones are however very good at removing large chunks of skin and scaring the hell out of anyone who views them.

Very...baroque-goth. Gotta love it. Brunell would have been proud :D.

there's a cheap upgrade you can do on your Pioneer 656. the case is really flimsy and vibrates. Get yourself a roll of Dynamat for about £20 from a car audioplace, open up the case and line every part of the case you can get at - lid, walls, base(including the CD tray). you'll add a couple of kilo's of inert mass and stop the thing ringing. I did this to mine and it was a well worthwhile tweak. made more difference than changing the mains lead, which I also couldn't resist.

Penance, that monstrosity is positively obscene, hide it at once.
i've got the Baby RB-1070 and it has never managed to run out of steam so far, not that i play it all that loud. Been looking out, slow time for a s/h twin for many, many months now to no avail.

With an amp like that you dont really need a sub penance. Just get some great big gnarly speakers, you know you want to ;)

Get yourself a good DVD-A title and you will be feeling the bass through the 1090.

I dont think the I/C will cure the muddy bass,my guess is the room acoustics causing bass humps at certain frequencies! When i 1st got my m53's i also suffered from slightly boomy bass but i knew it wernt my other componants as there wasnt such problems with my previous speakers. When i messed around with the positioning(this took several weeks to perfect) and wwas rewarded with bass combining both clean and clear depth as well as enough kick to wind myself:JOEL: so dont be afraid of shifting those Dyns around, just make a note for each time u move it,i.e distance from rear+side walls and how it sounds(abit geeky i know but well worth it!)

IMO trying to use cables to "tune" a system is a short route to madness. Certainly something as fundamental as "flabby bass" won't be cured by any cable.

You'll end up trying ever more expensive stuff and your inbuilt immunity to oleaginous substances of reptilian origin will rapidly run out :)

yep, starting to wonder about the bass. on some music it just rolls along in a continuous background rumble

still a very enjoyable listen, but the bass can detract. Maybe im being over critical. A good listen over the weekend i think

Definitely sounds like a room issue. If the Rotel drives the Dyns to dig deeper than the previous amp, it may simply be exciting a room mode that it wasn't before. Or potentially it's just boundary reinforcement becoming apparent where before it wasn't due to less or less deep bass. Try playing with positioning and see what happens.

Congrats, you have an enviable, amp, I have always fancied this, got the circuit diagram from rotel, BTW, gods, what a monster.

cascode input and voltage stages, bipolar all the way through, triple darlignton into 4 pairs of output transistors, loads of storage capacity. Mirror image, ie input splits into 2 a la borbely.

looks great on paper. Interesting feedback as well as ouptut to input, there is output to 2nd stage, not often seen.

I got my 300bs, BTW Pen wow, superb, if you have the speakers, best so far, really like it.:)
