Vintage Tannoys

It's possible but when I called them in 2006, they said that the 15DMT (at least) was at the very end of its production.

They've been quietly made since 1990 or thereabouts. Quite a long life.

Maybe their website was slightly out of date, or perhaps they only moved those models to the 'archive' section when their outlets/dealers had pretty much sold all their stock of them....

Shame that this might be the end of the biggies, unless they have some new designs up their sleeve.

I think they're only responding to the changes in the business. Smaller more compact control rooms, home studios, 5.1(and more).

Not that I've been paying any attention but hasn't there been signs of a move towards wider baffle, larger driver speakers emerging in the domestic speaker market? (moving off topic for a minute)

I'm looking at the other end at the moment - super tweeters.
Got a nice little pair of ribbons in the spares cupboard that should sit nicely of the baffle.

You know,

A little part of me likes to think it's comments on here, zerogain, wigwam and the other forums exhalting the virtues of big cones and baffles in the bass may be contributing in our way to a possible sea-change.

Who knows? a pebble can start an avalanche :D

hey lets start a new pressure group!

C.A.R.S. - the Campaign for Real Speakers.

it worked for beer!

That's a bloody good idea Neil.

How are you getting along with your supertweets?

I've tried them. They are flat little ribbons so sit flat on the front baffle. I can see them extending the response if I measure the speakers and I can just hear when they are in operation but frankly they don't make the speaker any more enjoyable to listen to. Put it another way, I can't hear anything missing without them so probably not worth the effort.

I wouldn't choose 'CARS' or Gordon might mistakenly tax the large 'drivers'.

I'm no expert but....

If you look in the video for 'Johnny Come Home' by the Fine Young Cannibals I'm pretty sure you can see a large pair of Tannoys either side of the drummer and behind Roland Gift as he sings his cotton socks off in some studio.

I'll get my anorak.

P.S. Don't know what model they are though

yup. Look like Tannoys to me. No idea what model though!

Difficult to see what they are, but the one on the left looks like it's got the fluted sides (or whatever you call them), in which case I'd guess at maybe the corner York? Looks too narrow to be a GRF and too wide to be a Canterbury, unless I'm misjudging the scale.

It difficult to judge the scale from that image but to me it seems like they are off the floor, so they cannot be GRFs (too heavy). The fluted side suggest Canterbury but the drivers are too large with respect to the cabinets and too high. From the scale I'd say Lockwoods, in custom cabinets (if they are indeed Tannoys).

Possibly but I can't see the square line around the driver in the picture. The speakers in the picture appear to be closer to the wall than would be possible with corner GRFs/Canterbury. Also horn cabinets would be too heavy to lift off the floor (to me they appear to be off the floor).

Corner Lancasters don't have fluted sides, and every Lockwood cabinet I've ever seen has been rectangular and fairly squat - heavily made (would love a pair)! The York doesn't have the square panel around the driver, I think it's just a bass reflex cab with the ports down the fluted sides, like the Canterbury.
