Merlin WM summed up the sound of my system more succintly in one of these threads, something about punchy musical in a powerfull unforced way or something like that, and he says he don't read mags, with prose like that he should be writing them

His prose is publishable no doubt but a spell checker would be an essential tool. :)

FWIW in comparison to the Arts, i've found bass in proacs, a little lumpy and kinda hanging in middle between speakers, bass seems slow and ponderous, never heeard the D100's but felt the same from studio 125 response 3.8 and new d25, the only proacs i've heard that weren't lumpy were the tablette 8 sigs and the future 2's which were shite IMHO, very thin and lacking, and honestly could not see where the money went.

I'd certainly agree, many Proacs have had rather ponderous bass, the 3.8 in particular was not suited to most UK rooms. They certainly trade some pitch definition for an overall warmth, although the new D38 and D100's are slightly more clean down below. But you either like a Proac presentation or you don't, they certainly don't sound like Wilsons and other hifiscrewthemusic loudspeakers.

When you heard the Futures, do you remember where they were placed relative to the room boundaries?

They were in front of wide bay with small window at least 2 metres from start of bay and about 3 mmetres from either wall, was with cary cdp and art audio amps.IIRC, just not my cup of tea some love them, just been down for a coupla tunes and bass very fast, and my speakers are extremely clean sounding, I have a feeling that they are not gonna do it for bub, too much air not enough grunge.

Paul,

Ferriari? comparing Naim with Maranello's finest, you jest sir :D , too tempremental, Aston far too country manor  plus all that sloany harper & queens bollox, fraid not simpkins, Personaly I prefer a 911 turbo 4 96' bin the stock IHI's take out to 4.2 litres (Arrow rods/followers), some minor valve work, new fully mapable engine management say one of Ritchices OMEX units, willis ring the blocks, some hand made fel-pro specials and a touch more boost say 24 psi to be going on with. Nice little custom made atmoshpere cleaner :D some water injection, couple of trick thermo couples in the turbo's (for extra fuel cooling say 10% after 850C and saftey) and 300 Bhp of programmable dial in gas. some rather horny Borbet 'a' revisions 20 inches, with 285/30 ZR 20's, custom build Ledar remote mount gas adjustable coil overs. and your getting the picture now.
Where you would notice are large difference between yours and Bub's, would be I suspect mid range texure and presence, that real feel, with a fair bit more detail I feel, plus that openiness and staging that you like.
mana tends to bleach the sound, stripping away the texture and giving that monocromatic sound but giving definition and drive, plus a touch more detail extraction from the salisbury electronics.
I did used to scribe for the mag a few years back, but not in the electronics world, and I did have a rarther nifty spell checker back then :D

I have a couple of rather naughty CDs to try out, Paul, plus Cara Dillon, who sorts out the 'refined' from the rest. Cara took apart a £60,000 Linn system rather satisfactorily, but in an undemonstrative way. I have some lovely Bach oboe pieces to try as well.

Have you received the Naxos 'Requiem' yet? If so, have a listen to the vocals on 'Benedictus'. Play it at realistic volume, not too quiet, but definitely (!) not too loud.

The imaging is not a big thing with me, I use Naim after all, but I ought to get round to switching the speakers round as it was definitely a bit better t'other way.

See you Saturday.

Duncan, please let me know what time to get you, and from which station.

James

Bollocks.

I bet you have even modified your toothbrush:) You and Tim allen would get on well I feel, was gonna compare mine with a Macca F1 (original not LM) but bubs still to come round and wouldn't want him spilling drink into me cdp by accident, dya think hes gonna like it, or is he gonna suggest mana, if thats the case then let him try gettin it by the missus, coz even with my advanced sales techniques i would fail miserably, still hes a tummy doc and the wife sells a tummy product, so wshe may listen to him if he rx's her prods:) Nah the missus aint gonna be there in case one o them mentions how much i've spent on my we stereo.

I prefer 911 turbo 4..............

girly comfort blankie, can't you handle rwd?:) As a Alfa specialist,i would have thought you could drive properly ;)

Yeah you might like the way mine handles vocals and woodwind, much like wm says plenty texture in the midrange. not got all me new cds yet and not got requiem yet either, how'd you like the cds?, have been really busy at work done (00 miles in last 2 days, so not had chance to drop off copies, will wait till saturday now.

I can't quite believe that WM has written a "pre-cognitive" comparative review of two systems which he hasn't heard!

Absolute crap as usual.

Alfa Romeos are FWD, girls only.

CDs good Paul, ta.

No saab as an alfa specialist you learn how to fix em but they don't go long enough to learn to drive in em.

Besides when it comes to racing cars, some specialise in breaking them and others specialise in mending em, When Colin McRae was at subaru and a new mechanics would join and some of them thought they were "HANDS" one short trip in the passenger seat with CM driving was enough to shut them up, "*** He's ******* mad or such was enough to convince them to fix what he broke.

Methinks he might be yankin' yer chain James

James,

your such an old stick in the mud :p I must admit that 'Bleached' isn't one of my adjectives, but one of another famous scribes more than apt words to discribe man, textural (absence) readjustment is another.
James "Can't do real dynamics until its on mana", you haven't even begun to know what your missing, I reckon another 20 or so levels and you may begin to get some idea, but just think!!! all that dynamic WITH texture and presence, food for thought indeed, goodnite Domestos, mana bleaches the sound that other stands cannot reach. :)
Saab,
Try a GTV 6, you woosey, saab lovers are all dentists and mid management back passage cleansers are they not?

I'm looking for a black M3. Another of your favourite products, eh, Tony?

If you want to read proper journalists' Mana reviews, check their website. None say 'bleached', whatever that means.

So assuming they were at AS, a major Proac dealer, I'm amazed they weren't positioned properly

Futures work best close to the rear wall. They are voiced for that position. Pull them out into the room and they will sound thin. 12" or so from the rear wall they will provide all the body and scale missing from thumbelina type speakers.

you still got that wannabe krell? i suppose the shearne is ok if you like that kind of thing, personally i prefer my kit to be a bit less lawrence llewelyn-bowern. of course if you are satified with mediochre.... :D

Hi Paul,

I think all cars look best in black. M5 is v nice, perhaps a bit too big, though.
