Because in the most general terms, manufacturing QC appears to be better in the aforementioned countries.
I have yet to see a piece of Chinese Hi-Fi built as well as Nagra, DartZeel or Esoteric (not that there's much around to compare, at their very high prices).
I agree about increased cost base, but you are paying for that last ounce of build, finish & QC/testing.
Some people (myself included) would expect that for £4k......

Not China-bashing at all. Japan was the same 30 years ago, now it's products are very highly regarded. I expect Chinese made goods to potentially have that cachet in 20-30 years too.
