ATC studio monitors

I was just showing my girlfriend the latest speaker shortlist to demo, including atc, pmc and she just proclaimed the bh2 as "hideous". Thanks for your input love - very helpful. :D

Paul,

WAF is a clients biggest worry trust me here :)
Even though your GF has dismissed them for you, I feel its well worth a trip to see what they are capable of, even bring the Bryston with you.
I'm sure I can stretch to a TGI's. Wm

Having listened to a lot of so called high end speakers, ATC active 50s make instruments sound life like and very musical. The better the source the better they sound. Simple really.

as conssistent as ever....

.... I have not been round here for several months due to my work load and being interested in things other than hifi. I had a spare moment, wanted a laugh and thought that I would log on. Good to see the stalwarts here. And surprise surprise the bub has the very very best hifi show still rages on.

It really amuses me that people here will use so many tactics to justify and defend gear; its only hifi not a cure for cancer; i do have a cure for cancer but it only works on mana. I will not say much on this thread other than as a studio owner most of you guys here have no idea about recording/mastering engineers preferences. Studio guys rant just as much about my monitor is better than yours etc and at the high end things get very esoteric, just like in hifi - have a look at Bob Clearmountains setup; you may know him - he masters a lot of stuff, and wins lots of awards - so why is he using such modest speakers - because it is all about prefrerence and using the gear that you get the best results from.

And just because a studio has xyz speaker...sorry, monitors.... in house it does not mean that the engineer will use them, they also bring their own....and their own outboard gear....personally I use Dynaudios because I can listen to them all day long, many would chose Mackie instead (the current fave at this price range) but I find them too fatiguing.

I moved from Wadia to an i-book/i-tunes/quad. Because it is better? No because I can listen to more music, more easily and have more control over it through my i-book. Its all about the music isnt it? Lighten up guys.

cornflake are a mana dealer

Sounds like mana would have been useful when I moved the 100's nearer the back wall at cornflake, when they lost control a touch (in my recent review a few pages ago). These shops could do with this kit as standard stock if it's useful. PMC want £500 for their rather tasty looking stands, so it makes no odds if I order a different make. Not sure whether I would want something ugly under them, as they sound pretty damn amazing already. I'll have to have a look & listen sometime.

Is Avid a shop, or a person?

Cornflake did stock mana last time I was there, I wonder why they did not wheel them out? Interestingly they did not have any direct comparisions, only cheap and cheerful quadraspire as an alternative.

Honestly Paul, they are wow and boring at the same time, sublime reproduction of the instruments & placement on the stage, huge bass and an image you can drive a bus through, truly Musical? not that I've heard.
Wm

A bit like expensive (£2000 per bottle) white wine - tastes like slightly flavoured water which is why I prefer a good bottle of £40 Ribera del duero or Rioja - much more entertaining!

dominicT, what is your opinion about quad 99pre/909 power?
I am thinking to try it with my ATC 35.
and Huter is also on my list :) was it worth it?

I did a write up of ym listening test on this forum. I did a blind test (i was blindfolded) at KJ West One! The quad was so good that I sold my Nuvista M3 and got the quad instead. I did it not because the quad was 'better in every respect' but because I wanted a compact box (just one box) but was really surprised at how good the bass was (faster than the M3). Have not listened to the ATC but I would say that whilst Quad are not pipe and slippers any more, that they partner 'monitor type' speakers well; but of course it is about preference. The Hutter is awesome (again I did a huge write-up on Hifichoice forum a few years back and it was Quadraspire ref vs mana vs isoblue vs target vs hutter.) Hutter won easily (to my ears) for detail, control, naturalness, speed, modular design, custom finish, very high quality finish. As I now only have three small boxes of hifi rather than 8 large boxes I am selling my Hutter. PM me for more info - you could get a bargain as Hutter is rarely available second hand and I will put mine on eBay in September. Dominic

Nope incorrect.

Yes indeed. Same as I can hear N**m and L**n are no good but everyone still buys them.

Do you know the fable of the emporer that wore no clothes?
